The Houston Astros sign stealing scandal rocked Major League Baseball, and put a major asterisk on their accomplishments between 2017 and 2018. But six-time All-Star Joey Votto has a different perspective on the whole controversy.

Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show, the Cincinnati Reds star dismissed the idea that the Astros need to be singled out for what they did. He said that it “baffles” him that people believe they were only ones cheating.

“The idea that they were the only ones doing something wrong baffles me,” Votto said. He’s found a lot of agreement from fans in the comments section.

While Votto may not be wrong, the fact of the matter is the Astros were the ones that were caught and held to account. The degree to which they were caught remains to be debated, but Major League Baseball has determined that the Astros cheated.

Major League Baseball announced in January 2020 that they had investigated the Astros and accusation of sign stealing. They determined that the Astros had, in fact, done so and suspended numerous members of the team who took part in the effort or failed to stop it.

The fallout extended beyond the Astros though. Several managers and players from other teams were forced to resign or were suspended for taking part in it during their tenures in Houston.

But as Votto said, the Astros aren’t the only team that has been accused of sign stealing. They aren’t necessarily the only ones that have been caught.

Maybe the subject does need to be explored at a wider level in Major League Baseball…
