6-year-old Connecticut boy who suffered severe burns was not deliberately attacked, police say

A 6-year-old boy who was severely burned in April was not intentionally attacked, police said Friday, contradicting his family’s story.

Dominick Krankall was playing with three other youngsters outside their Bridgeport, Conn., home on April 24 when his face and legs were seriously burned. He spent more than a week in a local hospital, covered in bandages.

Dominick’s family blamed one of his playmates, an 8-year-old boy they said had bullied Dominick for an extended time and threw a flaming tennis ball at him.

But Bridgeport police reviewed surveillance video of the incident and said they found no evidence of such an attack.

“There is nothing on the video portraying any of the children deliberately injuring the other,” the Bridgeport Police Department said Friday in a statement.

The cops said Dominick, the 8-year-old boy and a 7-year-old friend were all playing with fire and gasoline. There was also an 11-year-old present.

Police did not release the video, but the mother of the 8-year-old boy showed part of it to the Connecticut Post.

The video shows the 8-year-old in a corner of the backyard, largely out of view, when Dominick walks in his direction, the newspaper reported. Dominick then walks out of the camera’s view.

When Dominick reenters the frame, he is falling to the ground and his clothes are on fire, according to the Post. The 8-year-old boy also runs past him.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Dominick was released from the hospital in early May, and Bridgeport held a parade for him.
