Let’s be honest: most of us go to the state fairs for the food. Whether it’s a red velvet funnel cake dripping in cream cheese icing, a triple-decker cheeseburger sandwiched between glazed donuts, or a crispy bloomin' onion the size of a unicycle wheel, we love trying the decadent (and sometimes insane) concoctions.

But among the delicious treats, there are definitely some foods that are just plain... ridiculous. Or even downright disgusting. Here are six of the most hated state fair foods.

Deep-Fried Cheeseburgers

Surprised? We were too. Fair food vendors will fry anything they can get their hands on, and usually it’s win-win. Not so with cheeseburgers. @mr.chimetime’s reaction to this fried puck on a stick was brief: “This was so *** disgusting.” And then it landed in the trash. We’ll take his word for it.

Kool-Aid Chicken Sandwich

If this confuses you, you’re not alone. Available at the Orange County and San Diego State fairs, this special from the Chicken Charlie stand features a fried chicken sandwich that’s been doused in a Kool-Aid glaze and topped with a giant whole dill pickle. Everyone who tries it seems to end up with red glaze smeared all over their faces and/or pickle juice running down their arms. Instagrammer “Foodbeast” Eli Ayrouth called it “offensive.” Tik-Toker @brittanyau called it “confusing,” but said “at least the pickle was good.” We’d rather just buy a jar of pickles.

Pickle Lemonade

This is exactly what it sounds like: a sweet and sour concoction of lemonade and dill pickle juice, which includes sliced pickles floating with the ice cubes. “Y’all it was nasty,” said Tik-Toker @kaymarie023. “I give it a 0 out of 10.” Others were a little more positive. “It’s a salty lemonade,” said @explorewithgg. “It gets better as you sip it, but if you don’t like pickles...you will NOT like it.” Now we love pickles and we love lemonade, but together? Hmmm...

Scorpion Pizza

If the vendors at the Indy State Fair thought that mixing bugs with pizza sauce and melted cheese would make them more delicious, they were WRONG. In a this TikTok, Indy State Fair Queen Claudia Duncan could only wrinkle her nose and shake her head in visible distress while she chewed. A reporter from the Indy Star tried to take a more objective approach: “Crunchy...getting a lot of pizza flavor...not getting a lot of bug flavor.” Still, hardly a glowing review. Also, we don’t want to taste the bug, but if you don't taste the bug, what’s the point? We’ll steer clear, thank you very much!

Chocolate- and Bug-Coated Candy Apple

Speaking of bugs, this next entry in the most horrifying foods category is a green-tinted white chocolate-covered candy apple that’s been liberally plastered with “edible June bugs, crickets worms and ants,” according to its vendors. Reviews are mixed. “This was...really gross,” @gothsconsin said, before rating it a 2 out of 10. Another TikTok by @bugboy19 showed a bug actually crawling on the apple– so does that mean they’re still ALIVE??? We’ll take a hard pass.

Ketchup-Flavored Soft Serve

Soft serve is already controversial, but now the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto is taking it one step further with a whole booth dedicated to ketchup- and mustard-flavored soft serve ice cream. And while @chelsea_ahh seems to have given the mustard flavor at least a partial pass, @nhi_vo is NOT endorsing the ketchup. “Honesty only, it tasted like sour rotten milk,” she said. “And sweet too–I will not come back for that.” Neither would we.
