Between onion rings, chicken, fries and even Chicken Fries, there's a lot of food waiting to be dipped at Burger King. The King’s dipping sauces add up to six in total, and for a chain that prides itself on burgers, I was surprised to see some of the options.

Which ones should you leave the restaurant with? What do you need for your nuggies? I grabbed every Burger King sauce, tasted them, and ranked them based on how they pair with chicken and fries. Here are the best Burger King sauces you can order.

Best: BBQ Sauce

Tasting notes: smoky, sweet, spicy

Pair with: chicken nuggets, fries

I’m not sure if there is a barbecue sauce as rich and smoky as the King’s. It’s got deep, brown sugar-molasses flavors, and I’m very much here for it.

Unlike the rest of these sauces, which simply taste like sauces clinging to some chicken, Burger King’s BBQ sauce actually helps transform the entire chicken nugget itself into a new flavor. I love it. This is a forever-order.

2. Zesty Sauce

Tasting notes: briny, tangy

Pair with: onion rings, chicken sandwich

Burger King’s Zesty Sauce is super weird, but that’s the kind of thing I like to see when it comes to fast-food innovation. There are many unique flavors happening here, the heaviest of which is pickle juice. Horseradish, too; kind of like a brinier Thousand Island dressing.

It’s wacky as can be, and though it works for most menu items, you probably want to spread this on your chicken sandwich.

3. Buffalo Sauce

Tasting notes: creamy, spicy

Pair with: chicken nuggets, fries

This is sticky, creamy, and pretty much everything else you need in a good dipping sauce. Burger King’s Buffalo sauce is actually a lot less nauseating than other fast-food chains’ creamy sauces, though I’d make it a little bit spicier if I was in charge. Maybe that’s what Ghost Pepper Chicken Fries are for.

4. Sweet and Sour Sauce

Tasting notes: sweet, sour (it’s a well-named sauce!)

Pair with: Ghost Pepper Chicken Fries

There’s nothing wrong with Burger King’s sweet and sour sauce. The balance of sweet and sour is pretty solid, with a flavor profile made of ingredients like apricot purée and pineapple juice.

This one is neither offensive nor incredible; I’d rather dip my nuggies in this sauce than nothing at all. But I’m not about to think about it for a single second longer after I can’t taste it anymore.

5. Honey Mustard Sauce

Tasting notes: sweet, sharp

Pair with: onion rings, fries, chicken nuggets

Eh. This doesn’t do much for me. The flavor is extremely muted, perhaps even with a little more honey than is necessary. For such a popular sauce, I’d expect Burger King’s honey mustard sauce to pack a lot more of a punch.

6. Ranch Sauce

Tasting notes: tartar, cream

Pair with: fries, chicken nuggets

Burger King’s ranch dressing is an enigma like I rarely encounter. I tasted it over and over — by itself, with fries, and with chicken. Usually ranch sauces include very similar ingredients, but every single time I put this in my mouth, it reminded me of the same thing.

Have you ever had pickled herring in cream sauce? It’s such a specific flavor, and a highly polarizing one at that. It’s not what I want in my ranch dressing — or, honestly, anywhere in my fast-food experience — and yet, that's what Burger King's ranch sauce tastes like.
