50 Juneteenth quotes that capture the true meaning of the holiday

Updated

Juneteenth falls on Wednesday, June 19.

A combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth,” the annual federal holiday recognizes the end of slavery which officially occurred on June 19, 1865.

Though slaves had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the executive order didn't apply to those living in Confederate states. In fact, it wasn't until two months after the Civil War ended that Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, carrying a decree officially ending the dehumanizing practice, that enslaved people were finally granted their freedom.

The pronouncement led to an outpouring of joyful celebrations and Juneteenth was born.

Though it's been observed for more than 150 years, Juneteenth wasn't an official designation until President Joe Biden signed a bill into law recognizing the day as a federal holiday in 2021.

In honor of day, we've collected a list of powerful Juneteenth quotes from luminaries, political figures and celebrated activists including Martin Luther King Jr., Opal Lee, Shirley Chisholm, Nelson Mandela and other notable historymakers to use to however you see fit.

Share one of these empowering messages on Instagram or send them along to others to mark the occasion. Or, simply read them on your own in quiet remembrance of a day that signifies freedom from oppression and equality for all.
