Director Lee Chang-dong told The Metrograpgh, "My films can be said to be stories about individuals fighting to find the meaning of their lives. They are the weak, yet they engage in a reckless and foolish fight with the absolute strong."

Though he takes his anger out on his grandma, she continues to treat him with compassion. And over time, he becomes so moved by her unconditional love that it starts to rub off on him.

In the second, she's a wife who’s involved in an affair with a Korean filmmaker, and in the third, she's a divorced housewife whose husband has left her for a younger, Korean secretary.
