5 things to do this weekend: Boybutante, Beer Fest, West Broad Farmers Market and more

Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of Apr. 19-21.

Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.

35th Annual Boybutante Ball

  • WHERE: The 40 Watt Club (285 W. Washington St.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 20 from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. ($25 admission)

  • DETAILS: The annual Boybutante Ball is a fundraising event for Boybutante AIDS Foundation, which has raised more than $1 million for AIDS support services in Northeast Georgia. This year's theme is "Express Yourself, You Were Born This Way." For tickets, visit eventbrite.com/e/boybutante-ball-35-tickets-846672338757.

West Broad Farmers Market

  • WHERE: West Broad Farmers Market (135 Columbus Ave.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Free admission)

  • DETAILS: This Saturday marks the opening day of the West Broad Farmers Market, which continues every Saturday through December 14. In addition to a wide variety of produce, canned and baked goods, the community-driven market is known for its handmade art, fresh flowers and delicious hot coffee.

Athens Beer Fest

  • WHERE: 440 Foundry Pavilion (440 Foundry St.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 20 at 1 p.m. ($45 admission)

  • DETAILS: Looking to sample craft beers from the Athens area and beyond? More than 20 vendors will have their products available at this event, which will also feature food trucks and live music. Some of the brands scheduled to be present are Athentic, Creature Comforts, Delirium, Normaltown Brewing and more.

Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival

  • WHERE: Southern Brewing Company (231 Collins Hill Ind. Blvd.)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 20 at 3 p.m. ($20 admission, $15 advance)

  • DETAILS: Now in its third year, Blues, Brews & BBQ is a springtime blues-rock festival that features live outdoor performances, a barbecue food truck and beer made on the premises at Southern Brewing Company. Expect live music from six bands including the Rick Fowler Blues Band, Frankie's Blues Mission and more.

Free The Tapes: Home Movie Edition

  • WHERE: UGA Libraries - Special Collections Libraries (300 S Hull St)

  • WHEN: Saturday, Apr. 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ($Free admission)

  • DETAILS: Earlier this year, the University of Georgia's Brown Media Archives issued an open call for Athens community members to bring in old home movies on film and videotape to be digitally converted. This free presentation will feature clips from donors who allowed their footage to be screened in public.
