5 things to do this weekend: Athens Black Market, Cinco de Mayo, Indie South and more
Though there's never a shortage of festivals, markets and other cultural happenings in the Classic City, we've chosen to spotlight these events for the weekend of May 3-5.
Each week, the Banner-Herald will publish a list of five options for things to do in the Athens area. Please note that the events in this list are subject to rescheduling, cancelation or tickets selling out.
Athens Black Market
WHERE: College Square (Clayton St. and College Ave.)
WHEN: Saturday, May 4 at noon (Free admission)
DETAILS: Hosted by local nonprofit Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement (AADM), the Black Market is an opportunity to support minority-owned businesses in the Athens area and promote cultural diversity in the community. The Black Market is where many of Athens' best artists, food, and live music can be found.
Cinco de Mayo
WHERE: El Carretonero (124 Rowe Rd.)
WHEN: Saturday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: Event venue El Carretonero has pulled out all the stops for its first-ever Cinco de Mayo celebration, complete with a vendor market, jump houses and face painting for the kids and a full bar with cocktails for the grown-ups. The festivities will include food, treats, and a performance by Tepeyac Folkloric Dance group.
Indie South Springtacular
WHERE: Bishop Park (705 Sunset Dr.)
WHEN: Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: As the largest makers' market in Athens, Indie South's 17th annual spring event features more than 100 vendor booths selling everything from original art and handmade goods to curated vintage clothing and more. Both days will include kids' craft activities, food trucks and live music.
Cinco de Southern
WHERE: Southern Brewing Company (231 Collins Industrial Blvd.)
WHEN: Sunday, May 5 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. (Free admission)
DETAILS: Southern Brewing Company's "Sunday Funday Fiesta" will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with beer specials, frozen margaritas, a food truck, a class with Feel Free Yoga and Wellness Studio, and trivia with Bad Dog Entertainment.
Jazz Hands: 'Star Wars' Edition
WHERE: Hendershot's (237 Prince Ave.)
WHEN: Saturday, May 4 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ($15 admission, contains material not suitable for children)
DETAILS: What better way to observe "Star Wars" Day than with a stand-up comedy show where all of the performers come from the galaxy of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)? The experts at Jazz Hands have spent a year training STEM professionals to tell jokes about their work and fields of study.
