Minecraft Live is a staple of every gaming year, with Mojang and Microsoft bringing out the big guns and dropping heaps of news all at once about everything to do with the Minecraft universe. This year was no different, with a bunch of exciting updates revealed for Minecraft, Minecraft Legends, and more.

We’ve gone through the list and picked out some of the biggest news during the Minecraft Live 2023 stream.

New Minecraft DLC

Minecraft is no stranger to DLC, with a host of free and paid content available on the Minecraft Marketplace expanding the game in new and interesting ways. Minecraft Live 2023 revealed two fantastic new DLC coming to the game soon: a brand-new Star Wars: Path of the Jedi DLC, and a new DLC based on BBC Earth’s Planet Earth III.

Star Wars: Path of the Jedi will be available on November 7, 2023, and will let players go from padawan to Jedi knight, learn to use a lightsaber for combat, and use super cool force powers. Fan favorite Star Wars characters made an appearance, and players will be able to redeem a free creator item in the Minecraft dressing room.

Planet Earth III is a more educational experience, and will become available in both Minecraft Education and Minecraft Marketplace in 2024. It follows up the Frozen Planet II DLC, and Mojang says it will “immerse players in the wonders of the natural world.”

Minecraft Legends Updates

We thought Minecraft Legends was pretty good, if a little bare at launch, and Mojang isn’t done with the game just yet. The team has been listening to player feedback and implemented a bunch of community-requested features, changes, and updates, but more is on the way.

In just a few days, on October 19, a new Lost Legend will go live called Creeper Clash, which Mojang says is “just in time for Halloween.” Another Lost Legend will go live in December to celebrate the holiday season: Snow vs Snout.

There will also be another big update in December, adding frogs, new piglin units and structures, and a new allied witch character that will help you out by throwing potions at enemies. We don’t have an exact date for the December update, but it sounds like it’s worth the wait.

15th Anniversary Celebration

This was less of an announcement, and more of a promise — Mojang’s about to celebrate its 15th anniversary, and it sounds like it has plenty of surprises and updates in store to celebrate the occasion. Mojang also told us that Minecraft had sold 300 million copies, officially making it the best-selling video game of all time.

Here’s what Mojang head of franchise development Kayleen walters had to say of the anniversary:

As we mark our 15th year, we at Minecraft want to express our gratitude to our passionate Minecraft community. It is our community’s creativity and dedication that has helped shape this world into something extraordinary. As we kick off this milestone year, we eagerly look forward to honoring and celebrating your contributions, stories and adventures. Thank you for 15 amazing years of crafting, building and exploring together. Stay tuned for more updates and surprises in 2024!

Mob Vote 2023 Winner

The mob vote is a big annual event where fans are tasked with picking between three different potential creatures, with the winning creature getting added to the game in future updates. This time, there was the potential that crabs could be coming to Minecraft, with the 2023 mob vote being between crabs, armadillos, and penguins.

It’s not been without controversy, though, with Minecraft fans rallying around a petition to stop the new mob vote. Almost 500,000 players signed the petition, which accused Mojang of “tearing the community apart” and slowing its release schedule. Fans hoped that if they made enough noise, Mojang would implement all three mobs this year.

That didn’t happen though, and the winner of the mob vote is: the armadillo

Minecraft Version 1.21

Minecraft usually has one major update per year, although this year’s was definitely smaller than most years. That looks to be changing in 2023, though, as Minecraft version 1.21 is quite a big update, with all sorts of fun little goodies, some of which we’ve seen on the mod scene for years but are finally making the leap to official.

Included in Minecraft 1.21 are redstone devices called crafters which automatically craft items, new combat trials in trial chambers to discover in the world, trial spawners that let you set up your own trials, and a new mob called the Breeze. It all looks wonderful, and players will likely do some fantastic things with them.
