49ers Are Reportedly Signing Notable Running Back
With Raheem Mostert officially out for the season, the San Francisco 49ers have wasted no time signing another running back to their roster.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the 49ers are signing former Detroit Lions tailback Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad. He spent training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Johnson, a former second-round pick, showed a lot of promise early in his career. Unfortunately, he was unable to become the prolific running back that Detroit thought he would. In 34 games with the Lions, Johnson rushed for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns on 283 carries.
It’ll be tough for Johnson to crack San Francisco’s rotation at running back. If he does receive playing time this season, however, there’s a chance that Kyle Shanahan’s scheme could revitalize his career.
And with RB Raheem Mostert announcing today that he is out for the season with a knee injury he sustained vs. Detroit, the 49ers now are signing former Lions’ RB Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad, per his agent @DrewJRosenhaus.

Johnson may need a few weeks before he’s ready to suit up on Sundays for the 49ers. In the meantime, Shanahan will deploy Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Trey Sermon at running back.
Mitchell looked fantastic in his regular season debut with the 49ers, rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown. Sermon, meanwhile, was a healthy scratch from the lineup.
Losing a seasoned veteran like Mostert has to sting for San Francisco, but the team has more than enough options to keep its rushing attack afloat.
