Just about all of the news centering on the San Francisco 49ers over the past month has involved either disgruntled wide receiver Deebo Samuel or quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. But they just made a big decision on another star player – pass rusher Nick Bosa.

Speaking to the media on Monday, 49ers general manager John Lynch announced that the team has exercised its fifth-year option on Bosa’s contract. Bosa will make over $17 million in 2022.

The 2021 season saw Bosa return with a vengeance after missing most of the previous year. He had 15.5 sacks, 52 tackles, an NFL-leading 21 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and 32 QB hits – all career-highs.

Bosa earned Pro Bowl honors for the second time in his three-year career. He’s rapidly risen into the upper echelon of NFL pass rushers.

As you might imagine, 49ers fans are pretty excited to have Bosa for at least one extra year now:

Nick Bosa was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and was a breakout star that year. He earned Pro Bowl and Rookie of the Year honors and played a huge role in the 49ers reaching the Super Bowl that season.

An injury limited him to just two games in 2020, but he was better than ever upon returning in 2021.

Now that he’s three years into his deal, Bosa will no doubt want a long-term extension soon. He’ll probably expect to be paid as the top pass rusher in the NFL.

With the way he’s played thus far, he’s certainly earned the right to ask for that much.
