The 49ers Could Release Jimmy Garoppolo: NFL World Reacts
The San Francisco 49ers have yet to find a trade partner for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The veteran quarterback is not expected to stick with San Francisco, as the NFC West franchise has reportedly made it clear to Trey Lance that it’s his turn.
If the 49ers can’t find a trade partner for Jimmy G., could they just cut him?
While Garoppolo is currently rehabbing from shoulder surgery, he could still be released, according to Pro Football Talk.
Jimmy Garoppolo's current inability to pass a physical due to shoulder surgery isn't a realistic impediment to cutting him. Here's why: https://t.co/cGRm2C7lxj

From the report:
Under the labor deal, Garoppolo would be entitled to up to $2 million in salary from the 49ers for 2022 as an injury benefit, if he can’t pass a physical. That’s a far cry from the $25 million in compensation Garoppolo is currently due to earn.
And if Garoppolo would get signed by another team — after passing a physical — he’d be entitled to nothing further from the 49ers.
There has already been a lot of notable quarterback moves this offseason. A Jimmy Garoppolo release would be the latest one.
“The statement in your tweet is true but wouldn’t the 49ers feel pretty stupid if Lance gets a bad injury in OTAs when they cut Jimmy G before they really needed to,” one fan tweeted.
“Makes zero sense to trade him right now. Big FA names have come and gone and nothing will happen in the next month or so. Maybe they can get some value if someone hurts themselves before the start of the season but again, zero sense to do anything right now,” another fan added.
He earned a $7.5M injury guarantee when the 49ers made the NFC title game a few years back. It is subject to offsets if he were to sign elsewhere for more than that.

It’s going to be an interesting decision, that is for sure.
