49-year-old West Knoxville woman fatally shot in domestic dispute, police say

Nicole Fanney, 49, was shot and killed inside a West Knoxville apartment April 25, a Knoxville Police Department spokesperson said in a press release.

Officers were called to an apartment at 3210 Atchley Ridge Way in the Pond Gap neighborhood at about 9:30 p.m. and found Fanney, who had been shot multiple times, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are calling it a domestic dispute.

Detectives obtained a warrant charging Michael Merrick, 49, with second-degree murder in Fanney's death, the release said. Merrick left before officers arrived, but later was taken into custody in Whitley County, Kentucky, on suspicion of DUI, the release said. Merrick is being held at the Whitley County Detention Center, and will be extradited back to Knoxville.
