The season for taking some much-needed time off is approaching — and with it, a surplus of pricey options.

“With the holiday season approaching, many people across the States are already planning those well-deserved summer vacations,” said Mercedes Zach, travel agent at ASAP Tickets. “While some choose traveling in style and look for a high-class holiday experience, most vacationers prefer more budget-friendly travel options to make the most of their time away.”

Below are some of the top destinations travel experts recommend in the U.S. and beyond that middle-class families can afford and enjoy without breaking the bank.

Caribbean

“When it comes to the Caribbean, it’s not typically the cheapest place to go to, yet there are also plenty of more affordable options to choose from if you do go for an all-inclusive resort that already offers the majority of services included in the price,” said Zach.

“It might seem like a more expensive choice at first, but if you combine all the daily meals and entertainment activities together, it will help you save quite a lot of money at the end of your trip.”

She says it’s also more convenient, and another benefit of a resort is that there is a lot to do around it for every age and taste, and you have access to the beach, pool area, hot tubs, saunas and gym at no extra cost.

“If you’re looking for family friendly accommodations, Caribbean resorts such as Iberostar Dominicana in Punta Cana, BlueBay Villas Doradas in Puerto Plata or Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo in Las Terrenas can deliver great service, fun sports activities and breathtaking views for as little as $200 per night.”

She adds that the price for all the amenities can drop as low as $160 per night in the least-busy months and with some affordable dates in the shoulder seasons.

“A tropical Caribbean vacation can, in fact, be well worth the price and also a lot cheaper than you would expect if you aim for less-expensive islands such as Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico or Curacao.”

Mexico

According to Zach, Mexico is also an amazing tropical destination for an affordable beach vacation you can enjoy all year round.

“The first Mexican town that comes to my mind when looking for a budget-friendly holiday getaway is the surf town of Puerto Escondido in the state of Oaxaca.”

She says it’s famous for its untouched beaches, bohemian vibe and plenty of things to see and do for both adults and kids.

“Puerto Escondido offers you everything from snorkeling, swimming among the marine life, seeing dolphins in their natural habitat, trying out sport fishing, releasing newborn turtles and taking surf lessons to exploring the nearby beaches, such as Huatulco and the Bay of Carrizalillo.”

Located near the wide and long Zicatela Beach, in a marvelously mellow beachside neighborhood, Casa de Olas Boutique Hotel is one of the many affordable accommodations to choose from. “Which has free bikes, a fitness center, a garden and a shared lounge,” Zach added.

“Three-hundred meters from Zicatela Beach and four kilometers from Commercial Walkway, this property provides a terrace, as well as evening entertainment and room service for as little as $85 per night offering great fun and value for money.”

Salt Lake City, Utah

If, however, you prefer traveling domestically and if you and your family are nature lovers and want to visit some national parks, Zach says Salt Lake City in Utah is a great place to start with.

“Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon or Antelope Island State Park are just some of the many options around there that any adventurers will appreciate,” she said. “The city was home to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and offers the free-admission Utah Olympic Park, which preserves Olympic venues and is home to two public museums. Other activities that don’t require a lot of money include visiting the Utah State Capitol building and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.”

And if cultural events are something you enjoy just as much as nature, she says to not miss out on the many outdoor concerts in Temple Square.

“High-season apartments start at around $100 a night for an entire place.”

San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is another family oriented city, says Zach.

“Known as one of the best vacation spots across the States, and it’s also one of the cheapest places to visit, especially in comparison to other Texas cities such as Dallas. San Antonio is so much more than an image of colorful umbrellas by the River Walk,” she noted.

“In fact, it’s the second-biggest city in Texas, full of history, Mexican culture, amazing food and outdoor fun — and there is plenty to do in San Antonio on a budget.”

She recommends visiting the popular Alamo Catholic mission, strolling along the popular River Walk, wandering around the Pearl District, taking a safari drive at Natural Wildlife Ranch, exploring Natural Bridge Caverns or having a picnic at Brackenridge Park to get the most of this wonderful city before hitting the road again.

“And if you need a little break from the big-city life, I suggest taking a quick day trip to Krause Springs, just about an hour and a half drive away.”

Plus, the city boasts eight distinct theme parks, including Six Flags Fiesta and DoSeum Children’s Museum.

“While cozy vacation homes here go for as low as $64 per night,” she added.
