4 Myrtle Beach SC area nonprofits to volunteer for to get into the Christmas spirit this season

JASON LEE

During the season of giving, contribute your time by volunteering in Myrtle Beach. By volunteering, you can make friends and feel more connected to our South Carolinian community. Whether you love nature or music, education or food, there’s a way to get involved. Here are some volunteer positions where you can share your time and expertise.

Long Bay Threshold Singers

Contact: 843-254-7407

Bring comfort through music to people in hospices with the Long Bay Threshold Singers. If you can sing a lullaby, you can join the choir, which shares simple acappella tunes in small groups to individual patients in palliative care.

Currently the choir sings at various locations in the north end of the Grand Strand on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on the south end on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. They also hold two monthly rehearsals.

To get started, email longbay@thresholdchoir.org or call 843-254-7407.

Lowcountry Food Bank

Location: 4716 Northgate Blvd, Myrtle Beach

Contact: (843) 448-0341

Reduce hunger in Horry County by volunteering at the Lowcountry Food Bank. There are two ways to get involved. Sort food and pack boxes in the warehouse, if you want a more solitary, meditative experience. The warehouse is open for volunteers Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Drop into the food bank to fill out an application and volunteer the same day. Reservations aren’t required and you can stay as long as you want.

If you want to interact with clients and staff, help give out groceries at a drive thru food distribution site. To get started, find a date on the Lowcountry Food Bank’s calendar and show up two hours before the scheduled event. You’ll be put to work right away, and will stay for 30 minutes after the event ends.

Horry County Literacy Council

Location: 1012 16th Avenue NW, Suite 116, Surfside Beach

Share your love of reading by becoming a tutor with the Horry County Literacy Council. You’ll be matched with a student who could be an ESL learner, GED test taker, or individual with dyslexia. Form a relationship with the student in tutoring sessions scheduled by the two of you. The organization says education experience isn’t required, but patience and open mindedness are key.

To get started, fill out the online volunteer interest form and you’ll be contacted about an orientation session.
