There are indoor pets and there are outdoor pets. But where you choose to keep your animal often has to come down to preference So consider this a major milestone for one Amazon Parrot named Poncho, who went outside for the first time ever.

The 39-year-old bird has been strictly an inside pet, but that's all changed now that his owner brought him to an outdoor aviary.

She documented Poncho's big day out in the sweetest video online. At first Poncho seemed a little nervous. What was with all the sun and sky? Once safely inside the aviary, Poncho still was apprehensive. He stayed in his travel carrier for a long time.

The bird owner eventually managed to get him out of the carrier, but Poncho was still a little nervous. He stood on top of his carrier until his mama got him on a perch — then things really took off. Poncho loved it. He didn't even want to go back inside. You could definitely say that Poncho's first trip outside was a huge success.

This is clearly someone who loves her Amazon Parrot. People in the comments section also praised the Parrot owner for going the extra mile for her pet. "You are an angel for teaching him how to live life," one commenter praised. "Him staring at the sun was so precious," another person added. "I don’t even like birds but you make me happy with yours. The joy they get," a third commenter admitted.

How to Keep Birds Outside Safely

Let's just get this out of the way, not every bird is meant to be kept outside. In fact if your bird has bonded with you, they may not do well in an outdoor aviary. They may do best inside where they can keep an eye on you and have you close by.

There are some birds, however, that might benefit from the great outdoors. Birds that are paired off, for example, might do well in an outdoor setup. Birds that haven't been tamed or show signs that they're discontented with living inside might also do well in an aviary.

That being said, almost all birds will enjoy spending some time outside, even if it's for a couple hours a day. It's good for them to get some sunshine and to stretch their wings, so to speak.

If a backyard aviary is in the budget, it can make for an excellent and easy way to give your bird that indoor/outdoor life. Just take it slow, like this bird owner did, so that your bird can get used to their new environment.
