"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

No matter where you live, one fact remains true: When the sun comes out, it's time to start planning outdoor activities for the whole family. But before the fun can begin, you're gonna need some toys for parties in the backyard, weekends at the beach or spent by the pool, and everything else in between. The best outdoor toys will challenge and entertain your babies, toddlers, preteens, and teens, and encourage kids of all ages to explore nature and play.

"Play is a child’s main occupation, designed to be intrinsically rewarding, interesting, and fun," says Jess Ackermann, pediatric occupational therapist at Children’s Nebraska. "Kids of all ages learn and develop their sensory system, motor system, and social/emotional skills through playing at each stage of their development."

But what are the right toys for different stages of development? We tapped three experts — Ackermann, Elizabeth Fraley, M.Ed., CEO of KinderReady Inc., and Chelsea Retif, lead occupational therapist at Children’s Hospital New Orleans — to provide some expert insights. Between their recommendations, personal testing by this editor's two kids, and many Amazon reviews from parents, we feel pretty good about this list of fun and educational outdoor toys, which includes sandboxes, backyard swings, water tables, and much more (including a few top picks for older kids). If you're looking for the latest, greatest toys overall, we can also help there with our best new toys list.

Bubble Lawn Mower

Bubble toys are recommended by a couple of our experts because of their ability to help babies with their visual tracking. "The bubbles allow for babies to develop spatial awareness and directionality between their location and the bubbles in the air around them," says Fraley. "Bubbles also help babies develop awareness of shape, form, and texture."

This pretend lawnmower pulls educational double duty because as babies grow into toddlers, Retif says they "begin to engage in imaginative play, and they also love to 'help.'" Ages 1-3

Little Tikes Snug 'n Secure Swing

Retif recommends swings for older babies and toddlers (you can adjust the plastic T-bar for toddler comfort). "Little Tikes makes a great infant swing that can be installed at home," she says. Just remember: "An infant needs good head and trunk control before being placed in a swing." Ages 9 months-4 years

They may have a large footprint, but the benefits of a sandbox cannot be underestimated. This classic lawn game is meant to improve hand-eye coordination and will certainly promote being outdoors as a family. This is also a fun, lightweight activity to bring camping! Ages 3-12

What to look for when buying outdoor toys

✔️ Developmentally appropriate: "The biggest goal for a parent is to choose a toy that matches their child’s developmental stage, not necessarily their chronological age," says Ackermann. "Think about the purpose of the toy being purchased and if it would align with the child’s interest and ability level to maintain interest and joy which will promote learning."

✔️ Durability: "Parents should look for high-quality toys that are durable, can withstand strong UV and outdoor elements, and are rust-resistant," says Fraley. "Look for high-quality brands that withhold a higher standard on the manufacturing of toys that will stand the test of time."

✔️ Quality materials and craftsmanship: This is especially important when buying wooden toys or play structures."Wooden toys should be wax-covered or smooth enough to avoid splinters," Fraley says. "Parents should also ensure that no lead paint is used on wooden toys."

✔️ No safety concerns: It may seem obvious, but "parents should look for toys that do not have sharp corners or small detachable parts that could be a choking hazard," says Fraley. "Be mindful of cords and strings to prevent choking or safety hazards. Toys that expel objects should be carefully examined before purchasing. When possible always shop non-toxic and ensure that the product is not flammable."

FAQs About Outdoor Toys

  • What are the best types of outdoor toys for babies?

"This stage of development is very focused on sensorimotor play. Choose a toy with a sensory experience and the ability to foster interaction between parent and child," says Ackermann. "Toys that make noise, light up, move, or texturally feel different provide excellent input for a child to learn about their body and surroundings."

  • What are the best types of outdoor toys for toddlers?

"Toddlers are learning the function of play and the purpose of toys. Cause-and-effect becomes important, imitation, and pretend play begin to emerge. Utilize toys that can be multi-purposeful to build both gross motor and fine motor skills... Toddlers learn to kick, throw, roll, and toss to a target all as part of their development through play and trial and error."

  • What are the best types of toys for older kids?

When kids hit elementary school age and beyond, Ackermann is a big proponent of letting them follow their chosen interests. "Whether basketball hoops, bat and glove, outdoor paint and easels or remote-control cars, just choose what motivates your child and they will facilitate their own imaginative and active play with the toy."

  • How do I know if there's been a recall of a toy?

Several experts noted the importance of staying up-to-date on current recalls by checking The United States Product Safety Commission website and Recalls.gov on a regular basis.

  • How many outdoor toys does one child need?

There's no hard-and-fast answer to this. What's more important than the number of toys kids have is the quality of time parents and family members spend with them. "A child’s ability to go outside, and just play with no prompting, to make up an activity or a game is a very important skill," says Retif. "Sometimes, as a therapist, I find myself telling parents, keep it simple and fun and look at toys that give you longevity, that can be enjoyed often and for many months/years."
