Finding a strapless bra for small chests is tricky at first—but once you find the right one, it can be life changing. The key to finding a comfortable bra that’s also supportive and doesn’t slip, is knowing the right places to shop and the a few techniques for finding your perfect fit.

“Most bra wearers are also not wearing the right size band, and it is most often too big,” says Veronica Szender, expert bra fitter and regional manager at Revelation in Fit. She explains that most shoppers opt for a looser band for a more comfortable fit, but then they’re sacrificing the support they need.

Additionally, those with smaller chests often experience gaping between the breast and bra. “A proper fitting bra will have the cups lay against your breasts without lifting,” adds Emma Seymour, Senior Textiles Product Analyst at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Meet the Experts: Emma Seymour, Senior Textiles Product Analyst at the Good Housekeeping Institute; Veronica Szender, regional manager for Revelation in Fit; Lucrecia De Los Santos Adon, expert intimate apparel and sleepwear designer.

Most department stores only stock a handful of sizes, and with online shopping, the measurements can be way off. That’s why it’s best to meet with a bra fitter in person to achieve the best results. And if you can’t meet with a fitter for any reason, you should at least reference a bra fitting calculator or learn how to measure your bra size at home.

Check out our top choices for the best strapless bras for smaller busts down below, along with some pro tips on how to nail the perfect fit and keep your bras in tip-top shape.

MVP Multiway Strapless Bra

Lucrecia De Los Santos Adon, an intimate apparel designer, highly recommends Pepper for small breasts. “I like Pepper because of its technical accuracy, quality, and size offering,” she says. Seymour also recommends the brand for those with small chests.

Overall, most reviews give high praises for the fit. Pepper recommends ordering true to size, and reviewers agree. But if you’re unsure about your size, Pepper lets you return or exchange your purchase for free within 30 days of your purchase.

What reviewers are saying:

“This bra fits better than any other I’ve tried, and it cups small boobs perfectly,” says one shopper. She adds that while the band fits a little tight, the snug fit keeps it from sliding throughout the day.

Women’s Custom Lift Strapless Bra

It’s hard finding a decent bra under $50. However, reviewers give Maidenform bras high marks for comfort, despite coming with a low price tag.

The Custom Lift strapless bra comes with straps that can be worn in five ways: strapless, straight, crisscross, halter, or single-strap. Note that the bra fits more snug, which is a hit or miss depending on your preference.

What reviewers are saying: “The bra is a bit stiff between the cups, but that helps it stay up and provide support when you are not using the straps,” says one Amazon reviewer. “Plus, it has a silicone strip around the top to help keep things in place and not slipping.”

Women’s Petite Sascha Strapless Lace Bra

For naturally petite frames that want their chest to appear bigger, this bra from The Little Bra Company does just that. It gives your chest medium to moderate lift, thanks to thick padding. And if you feel that the lift is too much (which some reviewers complain about), you can easily remove the padding.

A note about sizing, The Little Bra Company’s bras are designed specifically for small bands and busts, so they recommend sizing up from your typical bra size. This aligns with some reviewers saying the bra runs small.

What reviewers are saying: “If you’re looking for a heavily padded bra, this is it,” says one reviewer. They added that it was “actually pretty comfy for a strapless bra.”

And if you’re not into the lace, you can shop the bra in a smooth style too.

Convertible Strapless Bra

When you need a bra that can do it all while still fitting small busts, this convertible Lulalu bra is versatile and even offers AAA cup sizing. The AAA sizes feature removable padding, in case you want a more lifted and fuller look. (Note that the A and AA sizes feature a non-removable bump pad).

One concern for small-chested users is gaping between chest and bra, but many reviewers say this bra allows for little or no gaping. “It fits closest to the skin than anything else I’ve tried,” says one reviewer.

What reviewers are saying: Reviewers share that the removable straps give you versatility to wear with T-shirts, strapless dresses, and low-cut tops.

24/7 Classic Strapless Bra

Reviewers love that this Third Love bra comes in half sizes, which help give shoppers their perfect fit. Several reviews also agree that the bra never falls down, thanks to a snug band fit and no-slip silicone grip design.

While Third Love says this bra runs true to size, several shoppers say they had to return their original purchase for a bigger size, likely due to the tighter band.

This bra received high marks for stretch recovery in a Good Housekeeping Lab test, returning back to its original shape.

What reviewers are saying: “Nice bra, stays put all day,” says one reviewer. “Underwire could be more friendly to the breastbone though.”

Wireless Stay Put Multi-Way Strapless Bra

The Good Housekeeping Institute deemed this Soma bra the best wireless strapless bra in a recent underwear test. Because the bra isn’t designed with underwire, testers said it felt smooth against the skin.

Testers also liked that—despite the bra having no wire—it still very much offered the right amount support, thanks to the molded cups. Plus, the bra offers five rose of hook closures, which comes in handy if the bra stretches or your size fluctuates often.

Keep in mind that some reviewers comment that the bra had more padding than preferred, and you can’t remove the padding. If you’re unhappy with your purchase, Soma offers 60-day returns or exchanges. Just know that you have to pay a small restocking fee.

What reviewers are saying: “The bra is comfortable enough, offers good support, and has very little slippage,” shares one reviewer.

Fits Everybody Strapless Bra

Out of all the bra brands, SKIMS has some of the best inclusivity when it comes to sizing and shade match. The bra comes with removable adjustable straps, two ply wings, and a traditional hook and eye back closure.

What reviewers are saying: According to reviewers, the buttery-soft polyamide-elastane fabric is so comfortable, it feels like second skin. “I wear this even when I don’t need to wear a strapless bra. That’s how comfortable it is,” says one reviewer.

A few reviewers note that the band fits tight and recommend sizing up for a more comfortable fit.

Women’s Feathers Strapless Plunge Bra

When looking for the best bras for small busts, we spoke with Laura Burke, underwear expert and founder of Fit by Burke. She named Natori one of her favorite brands for those with small breasts.

What reviewers are saying: Shoppers agree, raving about the bra’s fit and comfort. “I needed a lightweight strapless bra for summer. This one fit the bill,” shares one reviewer. “It’s not too heavy or bulky, nor padded.”

Many also enjoy the added lace detail under the cups and say that the lace isn’t itchy at all. Several shoppers also like that the plunge silhouette works great for tops with lower necklines. The one most common downside among reviewers? Some say they feel the price is too much for the quality.

Goddess Multi-Way Strapless Bra

Skarlett Blue is a popular brand among those with smaller busts, and band sizing starts at 30, which isn’t necessarily common for bra brands.

The bra comes with removable adjustable straps, a no-slip silicone grip design, and a traditional hook and eye closure. Many of the rave reviews come from those with band sizes between 30 and 36.

What reviewers are saying: “I love that the cups are not enormous—a lot of E and F cups add unnecessary width, and make my chest look bigger than it is. These cups are nice and proportionally small to my band size,” says one reviewer.

Essential Bandeau Bra 3.0

Petite fashion blogger Jean Wang has recommended NEIWAI for smaller busts on a few occasions. She likes that the fabric feels smooth and seamless, while staying stretchy and supportive.

The bandeau bra features a sleek, more rectangular neckline that fits perfectly under strapless dresses or straight-cut tops.

Note that sizing isn’t traditional, offering XS-L instead of band and cup sizes. That makes fit a little more flexible and forgiving, though some might find that actual cup sizing might offer more support.

This 3.0 bra is an upgraded version of the original Essential Bandeau bra, which had high praises for comfort and staying put. The 3.0 is newer and doesn’t have shopper reviews yet, but you can expect similar results from the original (which is now discontinued).

Women’s Perfectly Fit Strapless Convertible Push-Up Bra

Those with longer busts might like this design by Calvin Klein. The cups sit almost on the same level as the actual band strap, which works great to hold more shallow busts.

What reviewers are saying: One reviewer who shares she’s a size 32B shares, “This is absolutely perfect for me, it doesn’t have any weird shaping things or spillage anywhere. It was definitely tight at first; but as I broke it in, it got more comfy.”

Other reviewers rave about the smooth fabric, flattering shape, and comfortable fit. Because it comes with removable adjustable straps, it works just as great as a T-shirt bra as it does for strapless tops or dresses.

How to choose a strapless bra for small chests

It’s best to try on bras in person with an expert bra fitter or lingerie specialist. Otherwise, here are some factors to consider:

  • Comfort: Seymour says that while a strapless bra should fit snug, there should be no digging in or pain points when trying it on. “Your bra shouldn’t have any gaps at the cup or center front, and it shouldn’t create bulging at your underarms or any other area,” De Los Santos Adon adds.

  • No gaping: People with smaller chests tend to notice gaping between their breasts and the bra. Seymour advises that the cups should lay against your breasts without lifting.

  • Snug band size: According to Szender, a tighter band is extremely necessary for those with petite rib cages and smaller band measurements, especially considering that a strapless bra doesn’t hold much weight. “Just like how loose pants wouldn’t hold up on your waist, a bra with a band size too big won’t stay up,” she explains.

  • Padding: Many strapless bras come with removable padding if you want a fuller look. But if you want a more natural look, keep in mind that some brands include push-up pads that you can’t take out.

  • Gripping technology: Some bras come with a silicone or smooth gel-like strip at the neckline that help keep the bra up. It should feel comfortable against the skin. If not, move onto another option.

  • Size chart discrepancies: It’s important to remember that measurements vary by brand. And, most department stores carry a limited size range and might not even carry your size. If you can’t meet with a bra fitter, try measuring yourself at home with a bra fitting calculator.

How we chose the best strapless bra for small chests

We consulted Emma Seymour, Senior Textiles Product Analyst at The Good Housekeeping Institute. Both the Soma Wireless Stay Put Multi-Way Strapless Bra and ThirdLove 24/7 Classic Strapless Bra were tested by the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab.

Lucrecia De Los Santos Adon is a New York-based intimate apparel and sleepwear designer with over 10 years of designing experience.

We also spoke to Veronica Szender, an expert bra fitter with over 10 years of experience. She’s also Regional Manager for Revelation in Fit, a bra store whose purpose is to find everyone of all body types and sizes.

How to tell if your bra fits properly

Well, it helps to understand the basics. “The band is the inch measurement of your rib cage just below your breast tissue,” Szender reminds us. “The cup is the inch difference between your band measurement and your bust measurement. So a one-inch difference is equal to 1 cup size.”

Is it better to size up or down for a strapless bra?

The internet has a ton of mixed messaging when it comes to this question, but all of our experts agree that this strongly depends on where you’re shopping at and whether or not the brand actually carries your size (or close to it, at least).

“Some people prefer to wear a looser band for their own comfort, but this creates a risk of losing support – especially when you keep the cup size the same,” says Szender. She explains that if you size up in the band, you actually have to go size down in the cup size.

Bottom line: A strapless bra MUST be snug to do its job, according to Szender. This aligns with our own research when several reviewers shared a tighter fit meant no slip throughout the day.

How to care for your bra

“When you don’t care for or launder your bra properly, you may have to replace it sooner,” De Los Santos Adon tells Prevention.

She likes to hand wash with gentle detergent and laying the bra flat to dry. “This preserves the integrity of the elastics and retains the cup or padding shape,” she says. For the same reason, she advises to never throw your bra in the dryer.

As bra designs and fabrics differ by brand, Seymour also recommends paying attention to the instruction labels from the brand. If the label says you can throw it in the washing machine, put it in a garment bag to help preserve its shape.

When to replace your bra

De Los Santos Adon suggests that a bra should be replaced every six months. She explains that the elasticity in the straps and band can change over time; plus, body changes can affect proper fit and comfort.

Seymour doesn’t believe there’s a hard rule to how often you should replace your bra, but she advises to look out for these telltale signs:

  • New discomfort

  • Noticeable wear and tear

  • Loss of support

  • Slipping

“When you start noticing these issues more than you did previously, that’s a good tell that your bra no longer offers enough support or fits properly,” Seymour adds.
