300 dogs and other animals sheltered inside man’s home in Mexico during Hurricane Delta

A plethora of pooches and other animals received shelter from a man inside his Mexico home as Hurricane Delta roared through the area.

Ricardo Pimentel welcomed about 300 dogs, along with bunnies, chicks and dozens of cats, into his residence in the Yucatan Peninsula earlier this month to keep them safe.

Pimental founded the Tierra de Animales shelter near Cancun in 2011 and boarded up the facility before Delta arrived. But as a further precaution ahead of the threatening storm, he moved the hundreds of animals into his home.

It was a big success, as each of the creatures made it through Delta.

Pimentel asked for donations to help take care of the animals ahead of the hurricane, and word of his efforts quickly spread.

“If I lived with just 10 or 20 dogs, I wouldn’t worry much, but here we have hundreds of animals and we can’t afford the luxury of not having enough food,” Pimentel said, according to The Associated Press.

To accommodate the animals, Pimentel moved the cats into his son’s room, and several other species into his daughter’s room.

A hedgehog was among the inhabitants that he shared the home with.

“It doesn’t matter if the house is dirty, it can be cleaned,” Pimental told The AP. “The things they broke can be fixed or bought again, but what’s beautiful is to see them happy, healthy and safe, without wounds and with the possibility of being adopted.”
