Hopkinton Police Department/Facebook

The Hopkinton Police Department in Hopkinton, Rhode Island, removed 20 adult dogs and seven puppies from a backyard breeding operation where the dogs were living in "horrendous" conditions.

They were called to the residence to investigate the unlicensed breeding of puppies as well as conditions detrimental to the health of the dogs.

I'm sure I'm just reading into this, but it looks like the adults dogs are smiling now that they have been rescued.

The Hopkinton Police Department posted, "On March 8, 2024, Hopkinton Police, Hopkinton Animal Control, RI Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as an Environmental Scientist responded to an address on Alton Bradford Road to investigate the unlicensed breeding of puppies as well as conditions detrimental to the health of the dogs. The resident was cooperative and surrendered twenty-seven Golden Retrievers - seven adults and twenty puppies. The dogs are now in the custody of RI Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who will begin an adoption process when the dogs are medically cleared."

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals posted these sweet puppies on their Facebook Page.

They shared that the dogs and puppies have tested positive for ringworm, and that they will not be available for foster or adoption for several weeks.

People reports that according to the police department, the resident of the property containing the golden retrievers was "cooperative" and "surrendered" the canines. The dogs are now in the custody of the RISPCA, which "will begin an adoption process when the dogs are medically cleared."

What an amazing rescue. We are so happy these dogs and puppies will all soon be on their way to wonderful forever homes.

This is Why You Should Adopt, Don't Shop

There are many wonderful, ethical dog breeders out there who care deeply for their dogs and take amazing care of them, only adopting them to the best families who agree to have them spayed or neutered. Backyard breeders breed dogs without proper knowledge, experience, or regard for the health and welfare of the animals.

You can find many purebred dogs at your local shelter or a rescue group in your area that saves dogs of a specific breed. Considering every year over 3.1 million dogs are surrendered to shelters chances are you can find the perfect dog for your family at the local Humane Society.

Shelter overcrowding is a huge problem and many shelters lack space, finances and volunteers to help care for animals. If you adopt from your local shelter you are not only saving the life of the dog you adopt, but making room for another dog to get the chance to find his own forever family.

If you buy your dog from a pet store, chances are you are buying a dog from a backyard breeder. Dogs bred by backyard breeders usually have behavioral problems, including fearfulness, aggression, and anxiety. These pups are rarely socialized, receive inadequate care, and suffer from a lack of attention.

If you absolutely have to buy a dog, do it from a reputable breeder, but if at all possible, adopt and don't shop whenever you can.
