3-month-old baby dies after being left inside hot car in Washington, D.C.: police

A 3-month-old boy died inside a hot car in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, authorities said.

D.C. police officers responded to a report of an unconscious infant in a residence in the Park View neighborhood of Northwest D.C. just after 6 p.m.

A law enforcement official told local television station WTTG-TV that the infant was likely left inside the car for a couple of hours Tuesday afternoon when temperatures hit the 90s — with a heat index of 106 degrees.

The baby was found unconscious and unresponsive and then taken to a hospital, but medics were unable to revive him.

Authorities said that the baby was left inside a black Honda Accord.

“We have a 3-month-old male, cardiac arrest ... doing CPR for about eight minutes,” paramedics were heard saying over the radio, according to WRC-TV.

The boy, identified by police as Aaron Boyd Jr., was declared dead at 6:40 p.m.

The incident is still under investigation. An autopsy will determine the cause of death, according to the police report.

According to KidsAndCars.org, a nonprofit “dedicated to saving the lives of children and pets in and around motor vehicles,” Aaron is the 15th infant to die in a hot car in the U.S. this year.

More than 1,000 children have died in hot cars in the country since 1990. Nearly 90% of them are age 3 and younger, the group said.
