The Big 12, as we currently know it, is on the verge of obliteration. Texas and Oklahoma are reportedly on their way to the SEC, leaving eight members of the conference in the dust. Is there a hero to save the day? Insert the Pac-12.

According to TCU insider Jeremy Clark, Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech have already reached out to the Pac-12 about joining the West Coast conference. Why? Per one source, the Big 12 is “going to blow up.”

Is it plausible the Pac-12 adds any of the three Big 12 programs? Sure. But it’s unlikely. The Pac-12 prides itself on academics and holds its programs to a high standard. That could be a roadblock to potential additions from other conferences.

The Pac-12 would be wise to forego its academic standards for now or get left behind in the dust. The SEC is now a mega-league, and all the other conferences will be fighting for the scraps.

The other issue here is the Pac-12, and presumeably the ACC and Big Ten, won’t just add schools for the sake of growing the conference. Conferences want to increase revenue, not add more programs and decrease revenue shares. Unless Baylor, TCU or Texas Tech brings a sizeable market reach to the Pac-12, it’s unlikely the conference makes a move.

Considering how quickly college football is changing as we know it, the Pac-12 would be wise to reach out to the Big Ten and form a super league of their own. It’s not going to happen, but why not pick up the phone and make a call?

The SEC was already king of college football. With the expected additions of Oklahoma and Texas, the rest of the Power Five is going to become irrelevant. It’s time to act and act fast if you’re not the SEC.
