3.8-magnitude earthquake hits Indiana

An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale rumbled in parts of Indiana on Thursday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred just outside Montezuma, about 68 miles west of Indianapolis, in western-central Indiana, near the border with Illinois.

According to the Indianapolis Star, people in both Indiana and Illinois reported feeling the seismic activity using the USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” tool.

“Indiana does get some earthquakes, but most occur down in the southern tip,” John Bellini of the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. told The Star. “The distance we’re seeing this earthquake being felt is pretty typical for one this size.”

Bellini added that the quake likely didn’t cause much damage. According to experts, aftershocks are always possible but are unlikely.
