New 28 Days Later sequel 28 Years Later has received a release date.

The project, which brings Danny Boyle and Alex Garland back for what is intended to be the first part of a trilogy, is set to come out on June 20, 2025.

The film has gathered some big names for its cast, with Jack O'Connell recently joining the already confirmed Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes.

The original 28 Days Later featured Cillian Murphy in his breakthrough role, and while he's returned for this new entry in the series, it looks like it's only as an executive producer.

But he did say that if asked, he absolutely would act in a new film.

"I can't give much more at this point," he recently stated. "But I've always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me – I have great affection for it and for those guys, [Alex and Danny]. I never watch my own films, except that one.

"It's always on around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips. And I've shown it to my kids. It's really stood up, even though it's 22 years old now, so I'm really thrilled that we'll get the band back together to make this one."

Plans for the new film are being kept under wraps, but the title suggests that it will be set long after the initial "rage virus" was unleashed. The virus turned humans into essentially zombies and caused the destruction of civilised society as we know it.

Filming for the second entry in the trilogy is set to take place shortly after the first one wraps, and will reportedly have Candyman and The Marvels' Nia DaCosta as director.

28 Years Later is set for release on June 20, 2025.
