28,356 Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled Due to Potential E. Coli Contamination

Now that it’s winter, we’ve been making hearty stew recipes, soups and more to keep ourselves warm and cozy. Of course, this means that we’ve been buying tons of ground beef—but unfortunately, you might have to put this week’s meal plan on hold.

Fresh off the heels off a salad recall, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced a huge ground beef recall. You should definitely take a look at the contents of your fridge and freezer!

Why Have These Products Been Recalled?

The products have been recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli. A third-party lab was given a sample of a retail package of beef and reported that it tested positive for E. coli, after which the FSIS conducted an assessment and concluded the lab was correct.

While no cases of illness have been reported yet, the FSIS is concerned that contaminated products may result in serious illness. E. coli can cause symptoms like dehydration and abdominal cramps and potentially result in kidney failure.

How Do I Know If I Bought a Recalled Product?

The items in the ground beef recall were produced on December 20, 2021 and bear the establishment number “EST. 965” inside the USDA mark of inspection or printed next to the time stamp and use or freeze by date. So far, it’s been confirmed that the potentially contaminated products were shipped to Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

According to the labels for the contaminated products released by the FSIS, they were sold at WinCo Foods, Albertsons, Kroger and Walmart outlets. If you’ve bought ground beef from any of these stores recently, check the packages immediately to see if they contain the given production date or establishment number.

What Should I Do Next?

The FSIS has asked any consumers who purchased these products to either throw the products away or return them to the place of purchase. Under no circumstances should you consume the contaminated products. If you experience any symptoms of E. coli, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

If you have questions about the recall, you can contact Sales Manager Mike Sinner and Quality Assurance Manager Rodolfo Mendoza, Interstate Meat Dist., Inc., at (503) 656-6168.
