27,872 Pounds of DiGiorno Frozen Pizza Recalled Due to Undeclared Allergens

When we’re too busy to cook, need to whip up a quick dinner or want to treat ourselves on a budget, we always turn to frozen pizza. It’s the classic go-to for any situation where you don’t want to put in a lot of effort, and there are so many options!
Unfortunately, as with all ready-to-eat products, people have to keep an eye out for allergens. And sometimes, due to manufacturer error or sheer bad luck, you end up with undeclared allergens. That’s the case today, because Nestle just announced a recall of approximately 27,872 pounds of frozen DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust Pepperoni Pizza, or roughly 17,100 pizzas.
What Caused This Frozen Pizza Recall?
According to the recall announcement, the frozen pizzas were misbranded. The boxes might actually contain DiGiorno three-meat pizza, which contains textured soy protein. Since soy is considered a major food allergen by the FDA, the company is required to list it on the box. The company discovered the mix-up after a customer complained that their pepperoni pizza carton actually contained a three-meat pizza.
Allergy labels are incredibly important for the millions of people who suffer from food allergies, not just on packaged food but also on freshly made items. If you’re allergic to soy, check any frozen DiGiorno pizzas in your fridge immediately.
How Do I Know If I Bought Affected Product?
The affected pizzas were produced on June 30, 2021. According to the recall announcement, any 26-oz. carton containing “DIGIORNO PEPPERONI CRISPY PAN CRUST” with lot code 1181510721 and “Best Buy” date of MAR2022 on the label is subject to recall. The products also have the establishment number “EST. 1682A” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The DiGiorno pizzas were distributed to retailers nationwide, so this recall isn’t limited to any particular state or retailer.
The FSIS recommends getting rid of any affected product immediately. You can toss it out or bring it to the place of purchase for a refund.
