One person was killed when a car hit a pedestrian on a Richland County road Saturday night, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Cinq’ue K. Wilson, a 25-year-old Florence resident, is the pedestrian who died, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Sunday night. In 2020, Wilson graduated with a degree in sports management from Benedict College, where he was on the track & field team.

The collision happened at about 10:15 p.m. on S.C. 48/Bluff Road near Abbott Road, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway. That’s in Columbia, about a mile from Williams-Brice Stadium, where the University of South Carolina football team plays.

A 2012 Nissan sedan was driving west on Bluff Road when it struck Wilson, who was walking across the road, Ridgeway said.

Wilson died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

Ridgeway said the driver, a 22-year-old from Summerville, was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

More than 841 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, and at least 113 involved a pedestrian, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 54 people have been killed in Richland County crashes in 2022, including 15 pedestrians, according to DPS. There were 73 deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
