24 people aboard sinking boat rescued by cruise ship off Florida coast

Two dozen people aboard a sinking boat were saved Saturday near Florida when a massive cruise ship came to the rescue.

The smaller boat was experiencing trouble about 37 miles away from the Palm Beach coast when a Carnival Cruise Line vessel welcomed the 24 passengers on board, Carnival said.

Those operating the cruise ship — which is named the Carnival Sensation — also gave water, food, life jackets and blankets to the rescued passengers.

Authorities have not revealed what caused the smaller ship to begin sinking. The boats were in international waters at the time of the rescue.

Cruise ships operated by Carnival are not currently welcoming guests for recreational trips due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Following Saturday’s rescue, the 24 people received assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard and were removed from the cruise ship, according to the Miami Herald.

Two of the 24 people who were saved are children.
