A 22-year-old man was shot and killed outside a North Carolina gym, sparking a family’s desperate search for answers.

The last time Jayden Harrison spoke to his mother, he told her he was going to work out at a Planet Fitness in Greenville. Then, early one morning, his mom said she received the devastating news that his body was found in the parking lot.

“Our family is suffering,” the 22-year-old’s mother, Susan Harrison, said in video from a July 24 news conference. “Jayden has always been intentional about pouring himself into others. And just recently, he started a journey to pour into himself. He was starting to meal prep and journal.”

She also said her son pre-registered for classes and wrote down life goals. Among the activities he wanted to do was exercise, leading him to the Planet Fitness where he was found dead early July 4.

“He had just started his supplements and he was trying to get all buff,” Ted Sauls Jr., chief of the Greenville Police Department, said during the news conference.

Jayden Harrison is remembered as a cat lover and a beloved brother and son. Now, more than three weeks after his shooting death was ruled a homicide, investigators continue to search for clues.

“Detectives have very little information to help them crack the case,” officers said July 24 in a Facebook post.

As the mystery lingers, anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 252-329-4315 or Crime Stoppers at 252-758-7777. Up to $2,500 in reward money is available for tips that lead to an arrest, officials wrote July 7.

Greenville is roughly 85 miles east of Raleigh.
