The 22 Most Anticipated Movies of 2024

Furiosa

2024 is upon us and that means a whole new year of *chef's kiss gesture* CINEMA! 365 days of buying popcorn and sitting down in an AMC recliner to listen to Nicole Kidman say "heartbreak feels good in a place like this." 365 days of ordering Thai takeout and watching the latest Netflix release. 365 days of heading to your local indie theater to watch that Swedish documentary none of your friends have heard of. (And actually now that I'm looking it up, 2024 is a leap year so you've got a FULL EXTRA DAY to do all three of these things.)

2024 is sure to have some incredible movies on its lineup whether those be big-budget superhero flicks, heartfelt dramas that make you sob or international features with Portuguese subtitles. We don't know the full 2024 movie lineup (heck, plenty of the movies coming out in the back half of the year haven't even finished filming yet), but we do already know premiere dates for plenty of interesting films. And while the pandemic and the strikes have made a mess of the release calendars the last few years, hopefully 2024 will be more stable.

So without further ado, here are 22 movies coming out next year that we're particularly excited for.

The most anticipated movies of 2024

1. Mean Girls (Jan. 12)

Get in losers! We're going to the movies. 2024 is starting off strong with a movie adaptation of Mean Girls: The Musical which is itself obviously an adaptation of the classic 2004 flick. Renee Rapp and Angourie Rice will be playing Regina George and Cady Heron, respectively, and although the trailer has conveniently left out all the music (hmmm), I'm choosing to believe this will be fetch.

2. How to Have Sex (Feb. 2)

How to Have Sex has been on the festival circuit for almost a year, but is finally arriving to U.S. theaters in February. The movie follows three British girls who are taking a spring-break-gone-wild-type debaucherous vacation to Crete. A weekend of clubbing, however, quickly goes wrong for Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce in one of the best performances of 2023 and probably 2024). Never has a movie shown the moment where a night out goes from great to awful so acutely.

3. Lisa Frankenstein (Feb. 9)

If you love Lisa Frank and you love Frankenstein, then you're in the right place. In this horror rom-com from Diablo Cody, Kathryn Newton plays Lisa, a goth girl who reanimates a Victorian corpse (Cole Sprouse) and turns him into her new boyfriend. Shocking what a tanning bed can do for a dead body.

4. Drive-Away Dolls (Feb. 23)

Nothing says the Coen Brothers more than normal people getting enmeshed in a complicated plot with horrible criminals. In Ethan Coen's latest, Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan play a pair for friends who decide a roadtrip to Tallahassee, Florida might be what they need to jumpstart their lives. Unfortunately, they bump into some criminals along the way.

5. Dune: Part Two (March 1)

While Dune: Part Two was supposed to come out in Fall 2023 just in time for the Oscar race, it was pushed back to 2024 due to the strikes. This may hurt the movie's Oscar chances, but it will certainly be nice for movie lovers who usually trudge through the first quarter of the year without much to look forward to. Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya will all be back and joined this time by Austin Butler and Florence Pugh among others.

6. Mickey 17 (March 29)

Although Mickey 17 is based on a novel by Edward Ashton, we don't know a ton about Bong Joon-ho's follow up to Parasite. The sci-fi movie about an expendable human with a regenerative body sent to explore outer space has Robert Pattinson as the lead. The supporting cast includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.

7. Challengers (April 26)

Zendaya's Fall 2023 is now her Spring 2024 with Challengers being her second rescheduled project during the strikes. In it she plays a top level tennis star in a love triangle with The Crown's Josh O'Connor and West Side Story's Mike Faist. The film is also directed by Luca Guadagnino of Call Me By Your Name fame, so I expect it to be HORNY.

8. My Ex-Friend's Wedding (May 10)

Kay Cannon, the writer of Pitch Perfect, is returning to the best friend shenanigans genre with this comedy about four best friends who decide to stop their ex-bestie's wedding after they receive a drunken voicemail in which she says she thinks she's making a mistake. The cast of Amanda Seyfried, Ariana DeBose, Chloe Fineman, Meg Salter and Liza Koshy is undeniably perfect. This will be funny.

9. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (May 24)

The long-prophesied Mad Max: Fury Road prequel is finally here. Anya Taylor-Joy will be taking over the Furiosa mantle from Charlize Theron in this gasoline-fueled adventure. Chris Hemsworth will also be joining the franchise as her antagonist, and hopefully we'll get plenty of Furiosa backstory in addition to high-octane chase sequences. I'd also like the guitar dude to return.

10. Ballerina (June 7)

Another major franchise prequel/spinoff coming this summer is this John Wick property. Starring Ana de Armas, the movie is set between John Wick's third and fourth installments and focuses on a member of Anjelica Huston's killer dance troupe. The assassin/ballerina is tracking down the people who murdered her family as one does in a John Wick movie.

11. Inside Out 2 (June 14)

Inside Out is nearly nine years old and that means that Riley, the girl whose mind is at the center of the original, is now older and entering puberty. With puberty comes plenty of new emotions and joining the original five are a cast of new characters including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke.

12. A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28)

While we saw bits of the alien invasion in A Quiet Place Part II, we're now getting the prequel everyone's been asking for. Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff star in this film about the first moments of the invasion and how humans attempted to fight back against the creatures with impressive hearing. I imagine it will be another "don't munch on your popcorn too loud" affair.

13. Twisters (July 19)

Nearly 30 years after the 1996 movie Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, we're getting a sequel about a new set of storm chasers. Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos helm a star-studded cast that also includes Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Maura Tierney and Kiernan Shipka.

14. Alien: Romulus (Aug. 16)

We don't know much about the upcoming Alien film other than it's a standalone movie set in between Alien and Aliens. Priscilla's Cailee Spaeny will be playing the lead role with Isabela Merced, David Jonsson and Archie Renaux filling out the cast. TBD if you'll be able to hear any of them screaming in space.

15. Beetlejuice 2 (Sept. 6)

Someone must have said his name three times, because Betelgeuse is back! While we don't have a ton of plot details for Beetlejuice 2, we do know that Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara are returning to reprise their roles. Joining them will be Jenna Ortega playing Winona's daughter and Monica Bellucci as Betelgeuse's wife.

16. Joker: Folie á Deux (Oct. 4)

As an ardent worshiper of Father, Son and House of Gucci, my most anticipated film of the year is the Joker sequel (and supposedly a musical) starring Mother Monster herself. Lady Gaga joins the cast as Harley Quinn and will certainly be wreaking havoc alongside Joaquin Phoenix. The first film was an Oscar favorite, so we shall see if the sequel earns the same pedigree.

17. Gladiator 2 (Nov. 22)

2024 is the year of long awaited sequels. 2000's Best Picture winner is finally getting a follow up starring Paul Mescal as the Emperor's young nephew from the original, now grown up. Also joining the cast are Denzel Washington as a former-slave-turned-merchant, Joseph Quinn and Pedro Pascal. Connie Nielsen and Djimon Hounsou will be reprising their roles from the original. Most of the other characters obviously died in the original. RIP.

18. Wicked: Part One (Nov. 27)

Less than a year until we get to watch Ariana Grande perform "Popular" and Cynthia Erivo belt "Defying Gravity." The first part of the Wicked movie is upon us, and I couldn't be giddier. Certified hottie Jonathan Bailey, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and Ariana's latest boy toy Ethan Slater are also in the cast. ALSO, it should be noted that most of the musical's best songs are in Act One, so this movie is gonna be a BOP (perhaps the second part less so).

19. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Dec. 20)

Your 12-year-old's most anticipated film is the third Sonic movie. The comedy series has done remarkably well with both critics and the box office and will be unveiling Shadow in this third installment. While Jim Carrey appears to be out for this one, Ben Schwartz and James Marsden will be back.

20. Nosferatu (Dec. 25)

Robert Eggers, the director of The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman is now remaking the classic Dracula film from 1922. IT's Bill Skarsgard will be taking the lead with Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe rounding out the creepy cast.

21. Untitled Jordan Peele Movie (Dec. 25)

We know absolutely nothing about this movie including the plot and/or the cast, BUT it's directed by Jordan Peele who gave us Get Out, Us and Nope, so we will be seated for whatever this is.

22. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (TBD)

The final piece of the Spider-Verse trilogy was originally slated to come out in early 2024, but due to the strikes it was removed from the release calendar with no new date given. We'll hopefully know when Miles Morales will be swinging back into theaters, but a late 2024 date seems likely.
