2024 partial solar eclipse in Binghamton, New York this afternoon: Live updates

New Yorkers will have the chance to view a potentially once-in-a-lifetime event this afternoon: a total solar eclipse.

The moon will pass directly between the Earth and the sun, creating a total solar eclipse which will block the face of the sun and darken the sky. While Broome County is not in the direct path of totality, a partial eclipse will still be visible, weather conditions permitting.

We'll be updating this story live as the day unfolds.

Monitor animal behavior during eclipse

Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville is keeping a close eye on the animals living there today, as one of many facilities across the country monitoring eclipse behavior. The park is now open for the day, and free eclipse glasses are being provided to the first 1,000 guests.

Park owner Jordan Patch says eclipses offer an interesting research opportunity.

“We could see nocturnal animals become more active during that two-hour window,” said Patch. “We could see wolves howling, or owls hooting. It will also be interesting to see if their learned behaviors are impacted. For example, will the giraffes return to their barn because they know that when the sun sets, it is time to go inside?”

Clear skies 'not looking promising' for Binghamton eclipse viewers

According to Jim Brewster, Senior Service Hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Binghamton, significant cloud cover is expected this afternoon, though it is possible there will be holes through which to view the eclipse.

National Weather Service's latest outlook suggests partly sunny skies between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Monday, with a temperature around 57 degrees. Brewster said in order to clearly view the eclipse, Binghamton residents will have to get lucky.

"The sky forecast for Central New York is not looking promising for a great view of the eclipse," said Brewster. "We're expecting a significant coverage of middle and high clouds this afternoon, but hoping there will be thinning or several holes."
