2024 Memorial Day events and closings calendar

Memorial Day is celebrated on Monday, May 27. Following is a list of events and closings in the Asheville area.

May 25

Asheville Community Band: 3 p.m., Rabbit Rabbit, 75 Coxe Ave., Asheville. Patriotic music featuring traditional and new favorites. Free.

Downtown Asheville Memorial Day annual Festival of the Arts: Explore lots of vendors from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 25-26 at Pack Square. Visit www.artfestival.com.

Free Memorial Day cookout: Noon-3 p.m., Riverside Park, 305 Tappan St., Spruce Pine. Gathering to honor fallen military personnel with presentations, games and activities, splash pad. Sponsored by Spruce Pine Fire and Rescue and Downtown Spruce Pine.

May 27

Asheville Jazz Orchestra: 2-5 p.m., Highland Brewing, 12 Old Charlotte Highway, Asheville. Big Band music from 1940s to present day. Performing in the meadow, weather permitting. Free. Visit www.highlandbrewing.com.

Memorial Day concert and ceremony: 2:30 p.m., Roger McGuire Green Stage of Pack Square Park, downtown Asheville. Army National Guard’s Army Band performs half-hour before and after the ceremony. Free.

Memorial Day service-Weaverville: 11 a.m., Community Center at Lake Louise, 60 Lakeshore Drive, Weaverville. Speaker is Lt. General Kathleen Gainey USA (3-Star Retired). Reuter Center Singers will provide music, video of rifle salute by Weaverville Police Department Squad and “Taps” by Weaverville Fire Department, “Amazing Grace” performed on bagpipes.

Memorial Day observance-Marshall: 11 a.m. on the courthouse lawn, 1 N. Main St., Marshall. Refreshments will be served.

Memorial Day service-Hendersonville: 11 a.m., Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 538 Tracy Grove Road, Hendersonville. Volunteers needed: Owners of antique and classic cars needed to escort veterans to the service. Drivers should gather at 9:30 a.m. in parking lot behind American Legion Post 77, Washington Street, downtown Hendersonville. Following the ceremony, refreshments, including a barbecue lunch, will be served to the first 300 people. Call (828) 329-4971.

Memorial Day ceremony-Brevard: 10 a.m., Transylvania County Courthouse gazebo, 7 E. Main St., Brevard. Speaker is U.S. Air Force retired Col. Art Cole. A presentation by retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Jones follows the speech, laying of wreaths, followed by playing of “Taps” by Transylvania County Honor Guard.

Memorial Day Ruck March: 8 a.m.-noon, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 216 Miller St., Waynesville. Ruck 10 miles to honor the fallen and help support Puppy Rescue Mission, a nonprofit who reunites service members with their four-legged battle buddies from overseas deployments. $10 at Eventbrite.com ($12.51 with tax).

Memorial Day ceremony-Black Mountain: 10 a.m., WNC State Veterans Cemetery, 962 W. Old U.S. 70, Black Mountain. Speaker is Harold “Ted” Minnick, Lt. Col. (Ret.), U.S. Army, Field Artillery Battery Commander, Vietnam 1969-1970. Ceremony can also be viewed at youtube.com/cityofasheville.

View Charters of Freedom installation: Ceremony was held May 20 at Canton Area Historical Museum, 36 Park St., downtown. Canton was selected to be the Haywood County site for Foundation Forward’s Charters of Freedom. These settings will display replicas of the Declaration of Independence, United States Constitution, Bill of Rights and Civil Rights Amendments.

Memorial Day closures

Buncombe County

Buncombe County Government offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The following departments will be closed:

Buncombe County Animal Shelter: Closed May 27. The Animal Shelter does not operate the same hours as the Adoption Center. On holidays, the shelter runs an emergency schedule, opening for 15 minutes only at 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p.m. For information about the Adoption Center, visit https://www.ashevillehumane.org/.

City/County Bureau of Identification

Buncombe County Courthouse

Emergency Services & Public Safety Communications: Administrative offices closed. EMS and 911 maintain normal operations.

Family Justice Center

Health & Human Services

All Buncombe County public libraries. Access digital resources at buncombecounty.org/library.

Mountain Mobility: Only operating ADA paratransit service on May 27. No other trips will be served.

Register of Deeds

Parks & Recreation: Administrative offices closed. All Buncombe County parks are open regular hours on May 27. All five Buncombe County outdoor pools are open May 25-27. Starting June 11, the pools will be open seven days a week.

Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office: Front desk will be closed. All other operations will be on a normal schedule.

Solid Waste: Buncombe County Landfill and Transfer Station.

Tax Collections/Property Assessment

Waste Pro: Closed May 27 and will operate on a one-day collection delay for the rest of the week. (Monday collection on Tuesday, etc.)

City of Asheville

City of Asheville offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day, May 27, a federally designated holiday that honors military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

City parks and greenways are open, Splasheville open 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m., pools at Recreation Park and Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center are open from noon-6 p.m. for $3 per person.

Closings:

Asheville Parks & Recreation: Community centers and administrative offices closed. Riverside Cemetery offices are closed, though the cemetery is open until 8 p.m.

Entertainment facilities: Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Ashevillle

ART Bus services will operate on the Holiday Service schedule. For more information about riding the bus, download the Transit app, visit the City’s Transit Maps & Schedules webpage or stop by the ART Transit Center at 49 Coxe Ave.

Sanitation services: No trash, recycling, or brush collection. Sanitation collections will operate Tuesday-Friday. The collection day for all customers — except for those in the Central Business District — will be one day later than normal this week. The Central Business District will be serviced on its regular Wednesday morning schedule.

Water Resources: Office closed but staff available for water-related emergencies 24 hours a day over the holiday weekend. Customers can call (828) 251-1122 to report water related emergencies, leaks, breaks and no water calls.
