The F-Type ZP Edition Is Jag's Last Gas Sports CarJaguar

Jaguar is attempting to reinvent itself as an all-electric brand, and as a result, its gas-powered cars will soon disappear. The first will be the F-Type sports car, which bows out with this new, limited-edition model, the ZP Edition, the automaker announced Tuesday. Jaguar will build 150 examples, and after that point, the internal-combustion Jaguar sports car will be no more.

The odd moniker references early E-Type race cars, created under the project name "ZP." Mechanically, the F-Type ZP Edition is no different than the current R75 model, featuring a 5.0-liter, 575-hp supercharged V-8, all-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The two liveries of blue over red and light silver over blue reference the two original ZP E-Types, and match a series of continuation cars offered by Jaguar Land Rover Classic. The ZP Edition cars get unique 20-inch forged wheels and some unique pieces of trim inside and out. Both the white roundels on the side and the grille surrounds are hand-painted.

Next year will be the F-Type's 11th year in production. The F-Type is generally agreed to be one of the prettiest cars of the 21st century, but critically and commercially, it was never the Porsche-killer Jaguar surely wanted.

What comes next is unclear. Jaguar already sells an electric car, the aging I-Pace, but it hasn't shown any electric concepts since. It has just said it wants to be something of an ultra-luxury Bentley rival. A planned EV version of the XJ sedan was scrapped a couple of years ago. Whether or not Jaguar even builds an electric sports car in the near future is up in the air.

So, take the F-Type ZP Edition as a celebration of the cars that built Jaguar, the XK120, 140, and 150, plus the C-, D-, E-, and F-Types. It was a hell of a run.
