What is the Governor's Cup? A brief history
Although the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky started their football rivalry in 1912, they have met only 25 times due to a 70-year hiatus from 1924–94. In 1994, the Governor's Cup was officially introduced.
The most valuable player in the game is awarded the Howard Schnellenberger MVP Award. Schnellenberger played for Kentucky from 1952–56 and was the Louisville football head coach from 1985–94. Schnellenberger, a Paul "Bear" Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award recipient (2021), died on March 27, 2021.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 19-15, but the Cardinals have a 15-13 edge since the rivalry resumed 29 years ago.
