2022 Holiday Event Guide: Light shows, Christmas concerts & more across the Triangle
We’ve put together a collection of fun holiday events taking place across the Triangle, from light shows and parades to concerts, stage shows, holiday markets and much more.

We’ve listed a few special recurring events up top, but then a schedule by date follows.

Ticketed light shows in the Triangle
There are several large drive-thru light shows in the area that run nearly every day until the New Year. Tickets are required and some sell out quickly.
▪ WRAL Nights of Lights at Dix Park: A 1.3-mile drive-thru holiday light show in Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh with large light displays, personal igloo rentals and more. There are multiple “bikes only” nights and a 5K Nights of Lights run. Check etix.com/ticket/o/6585 for dates, ticket prices and availability.
▪ Magic of Lights: This drive-thru attraction at Coastal Credit Union Music Park in Raleigh offers a 1-mile ride through holiday light displays and digital animations. Displays include a drive-thru Blizzard Tunnel, The 12 Days of Christmas, Winter Wonderland and The Night Before Christmas. ▪ The Chinese Lantern Festival: The North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival returns to Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre for its seventh year of amazing light shows, which run through Jan. 8. This show is experienced on foot, but walkways are paved and wheelchair accessible. Visit boothamphitheatre.com to learn more about dates, ticket prices and availability.
▪ Hill Ridge Farms Festival of Lights: This Youngsville staple offers more than a mile of drive-thru holiday displays. Get more info on dates, hours and tickets at hillridgefarms.com/festival.php
▪ Lights on the Neuse: Experience a 1-mile hayride through holiday lights and displays at Boyette Family Farms in Clayton, plus a photo opportunity with Santa. Visit lightsontheneuse.com for info on dates, times and ticket prices.
▪ Christmas on the Farm: Naylor Family Farms of Fuquay-Varina offers a hayride through their Christmas Village and a light show with live actors. There’s also a gift shop and photo opportunities with Santa. Get more info on dates, times, ticket prices and more at naylorfamilyfarm.com.

Holiday Express at Pullen Park
The Pullen Park train, one of the area’s most popular attractions, always sells out in a matter of hours, and that was also the case this year. (If you’re one of the lucky ones who snagged a ticket, have fun!) For information, visit raleighnc.gov/parks/holiday-express.
Theatre in the Park’s ‘A Christmas Carol’
This Ira David Wood III production has been a holiday highlight since 1974. There are shows in both Raleigh and Durham, but get your tickets soon. Details: theatreinthepark.com

Historic Oakwood Candlelight Tour
The historic neighborhood candlelight tours are a highlight of the holidays. See homes dating from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s decked out in their holiday best. Docents at each stop offer information about unique features of the homes, the family lineage and surrounding community. Ticket holders can tour the properties at their own pace, but allow three to four hours to view all featured homes. Holiday tour of the Governor’s Mansion
You can tour the decked halls of the NC Executive Mansion Dec. 8-10 (6-8 p.m. Dec. 8, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10) Visitors should enter at the main gates on Blount Street. A maximum of 100 visitors will be allowed inside at a time, so wait times to enter may be longer than in previous years. Cost: Free (reservations not needed or accepted) Location: 200 N. North Carolina Symphony
The North Carolina Symphony performs more than 200 times during the year, but the holiday concerts are extra special. In Raleigh, they will perform “Handel’s Messiah” Dec. 2-3 and “Holiday Pops” Dec. 9 and 10. They’ll also have holiday concerts in Wilmington, Jacksonville, Goldsboro, New Bern, Southern Pines and Tarboro. Details at ncsymphony.org.
THE RINK by UNC Health
Ice skate at a natural rink in the heart of downtown Raleigh with stunning skyline views. Tickets for two-hour skating sessions are available online or in person at the Duke Energy Center box office. ‘Cinderella’ by the Raleigh Little Theatre

▪ Muppet Christmas Carol: Grab a blanket or a chair and meet your friends at Moore Square each First Friday for a fun & free feature film. ▪ Christmas by Candlelight: Come to Duke Homestead for evening candlelight tours and celebrate an old-fashioned traditional Victorian Christmas with the Duke Family in 1870. As the Dukes switched from growing to manufacturing bright leaf tobacco, they enjoyed the start of soaring wealth just a few short years after the hardships of war. ▪ Lighting of Wake Forest: There will be Pictures with Santa (reservations required), a children’s craft activity provided by Wake Forest Woman’s Club, as well as musical performances by local groups. ▪ Brier Creek Tree Lighting Ceremony: Santa himself will be there to light the tree and partake in holiday fun near the Brier Creek Commons Clock Tower. ▪ Joel Lane Christmas Open House: Come and walk through the historic Joel Lane house - the oldest house in Raleigh - and talk to costumed re-enactors and volunteers. ▪ Downtown Durham Holiday: Downtown Durham is kicking off the holiday season with a day of shopping specials, music, live performances and the holiday tree lighting. This is also the first weekend that the Bullpen – downtown’s social district – will be in effect, so enjoy a beverage while you shop, stroll, watch and listen. ▪ Garner Holiday Block Party: This free family-friendly event will feature Holiday kids’ crafts, food trucks, games, music, and more. The Garner Express, a 24-person train ride, will take you on a trip around the outdoor walking trail, and when Santa Claus joins the party be ready for those family pictures. ▪ Celebration of Lights: Celebrate the season outdoors with live music and a bilingual Christmas message. Visitors can drive through to look at the luminaries, or stop and join the crowd on the patio for the holiday celebration. Admission to the event is free, and luminaries can be purchased for $10 each. ▪ Santa’s Reindeer Roundup at New Hope Valley Railway: The New Hope Valley Railway is the Triangle’s Train, offering excursion rides on vintage equipment at the North Carolina Railway Museum. This event is scheduled for Dec. 3, 4, 10, 11 and 17 with five departures per date. ▪ Gingerbread Lane at Apex Christmas: The Depot parking lot, in the heart of Downtown, will serve as the Gingerbread Lane, where businesses can create festive spaces to promote their businesses while providing child-centered activities. ▪ The Music of Christmas: This annual celebration is a wonderful presentation of some of our favorite music of the Christmas season performed by the ensembles of the Soapstone Music Ministry. December 6
▪ Selma Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting: Selma offers a nighttime Christmas parade for those who prefer evening festivities. The Christmas Tree Lighting happens first, in front of Town Hall, followed by holiday performances by Johnston County Choir and the Benson Baptist Hand Bells. There’s also a reindeer food-making station for children. The parade starts at 7, emceed by DJ Carlie, with fireworks at the end.
