2022 Emmy nods: 'Succession,' 'Only Murders' and 'Squid Game' lead competitive pack

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards will once again see top streamers compete head to head.

Keeping up with past years, the nomination list for the upcoming award show heavily favored streaming giants, with newcomers and previous winners making the cut.

HBO (WBD), along with its fledging streaming service HBO Max, led the way with 140 total nominations (up from last year's 130), followed by Netflix (NFLX) with 105 nominations, including a best drama nod for breakout series "Squid Game."

The South Korean smash hit will face off against award show darling "Succession," which won the best drama award the last time it was nominated in 2020.

Hulu (DIS) came in third with 58 nods thanks to top shows like "Dopesick," "Pam & Tommy," "The Dropout" and "Only Murders in the Building." Apple TV+ (AAPL) followed with 52 nominations, led by "Severance" and "Ted Lasso."

Disney+ was significantly down compared to last year, garnering just 34 nominations versus last year's 71.

Traditional cable TV networks also took a beating with just 86 nominations, down from 102 nods in 2021 and 121 the year before.

HBO's "Succession" leads this year's competitive lineup with 25 total nods, followed by Apple TV+'s "Ted Lasso" and HBO's "The White Lotus" with 20 nominations each.

Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" seems to be the surprise breakout of the year with 17 total nods (tied with HBO's "Hacks.") Selena Gomez was noticeably missing from the nomination list after her two co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short both received best actor nods.

HBO's "Euphoria" also earned a significant number of nominations (16 in total), including a best actress nomination for Zendaya who took home the coveted award two years ago.

Last year, Netflix finally bested TV and streaming powerhouse HBO with a whopping 44 total wins. That ties the Emmys record for most wins in a single year, which was last set by CBS in 1974.

But the streaming giant is widely expected to struggle this year after their winningest titles "The Crown" (2021's best drama) and "The Queen's Gambit" (2021's best limited series) will not be not in the running.

The 2022 Emmy Awards will air live at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Monday, Sept. 12 on NBC. The show will also stream live on Peacock.
