Bicycle-riding has always been a common pastime for some and a necessary means of transportation for others. With the current state of the world remaining at the forefront of people's thoughts, many have purposefully opted to use two wheels over public transportation.
According to the New York Times, this anxiety has led to a massive increase in demand for bicycles, which has, in turn, led to a significant shortage.
"Some bicycle shops in Brooklyn are selling twice as many bikes as usual and drawing blocklong lines of customers," Christina Goldbaum, author of the article, wrote. "A chain of shops in Phoenix is selling three times the number of bikes it typically does."
Goldbaum went on to add that the bicycle panic-buying has also extended to other major states like Washington D.C., where one retailer "sold all its entry-level bikes by the end of April." The same retailer is said to have fielded "more preorders than ever in its 50-year history."
With this massive shortage only seeming to increase over time, especially with many people's reservations about public transit steadily rising, it's expected that bicycle stocks will continue to decline.
While several major retailers like Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods are already showing extremely limited stocks or none at all, Amazon still has some of its best-selling models available for purchase.
