Restaurant shares unconventional new social distancing 'policy': ‘Is it even worth it?’

A restaurant in Germany is going viral after sharing a photo of its creative social distancing measure.

Cafe & Konditorei Rothe, located in the city of Schwerin, recently reopened its doors following Germany’scontinued relaxing of quarantine restrictions. But, as these reopenings come with special guidelines for hygiene and customer safety, many establishments have been forced to get creative.

So the restaurant, with some help from the country’s RTL TV station, put together a stunt that announced its reopening with a bang — all while encouraging social distancing.

The result? A photo that’s now gone viral worldwide.

The image, which shows customers dining outside with pool noodles attached to their head, was intended as a joke. However, many social media users took the post seriously, believing the restaurant was handing out “social distancing hats” to enforce separation rules.

“Is it even worth it at this point?” one Twitter user asked of the “policy.”

“We have 100% lost our effing minds,” another commented.

Others, meanwhile, congratulated the café on its “brilliant” stunt, noting that the move was likely stirring a wave of free publicity. Despite that knowledge, some social media users wrote that they wished the hats were legitimate.

“Oh I think there’s zero shame attached to it, I would be really quite pleased to wear one of these hats,” one Twitter user commented.

Jacqueline Rothe, who owns the restaurant, told Insider she was happy the photo was making others happy.

“In these difficult times it’s a pleasure to make others smile,” she said.
