Good Samaritan starts #NikesForNurses campaign

When Ajón Crump’s cousin Danielle’s birthday was coming up, Danielle said she needed a new pair of sneakers. Danielle is a nurse in Florida on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic and wanted shoes that would keep her running during a marathon shift at the hospital.

Crump bought her cousin a gift card to pick out a new pair of sneakers but thought about all of the other nurses with the same problem.

Low on supplies? We’re regularly updating our list of retailers that are still selling household essentials, including toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

That’s when the #NikesForNurses campaign started.

Since creating the GoFundMe on April 14, Crump has been taking donations and shipping out brand new sneakers to nurses all over the country. Crump’s initial goal was raising $1,500 to help out 20 nurses, but because of the high response rate, she was able to increase the goal to $15,000 to help out around 200 nurses.

After ordering the sneakers to her house, Crump inserts a personal thank you card to the recipient.

“It’s the first time I’ve been so passionate about a campaign since running for high school class president,” Crump told Complex. “Its success will determine how much more I can do for people.”

Crump has been buying the Nike Winflo 5 for nurses because she can personally vouch for their comfort. Crump had first purchased them for her walks — she says she walks 10 to 15 miles per week — and she was very particular about the fit.

“There is certainly no shortage of nurses who could use a new pair of sneakers, so the demand will be there, and I plan on working hard to supply as much as I can,” Crump said to Complex. “I have some truly incredible stories.”
