Fitbit’s latest fitness tracker has one major advantage over older models

Fitbit has been a longtime favorite fitness tracker for both gym rats and the occasional exerciser, and the brand’s latest model has one huge perk over its older models: You can leave your phone at home. The Fitbit Charge 4, which launched on April 15, features a built-in GPS.
As an outdoor runner myself, I usually have to carry a cell phone with me during a run if I want to accurately track each mile and step; fitness trackers often connect to a phone’s GPS through Bluetooth. However, having a built-in GPS changes that and can make long runs, short walks and everything in between just a tad bit lighter.

The Fitbit Charge 4 tracks total steps, distance, steps climbed and calories burned, and stores that info on the device for 30 days. If you want to look back at previous accomplishments, however, you can go back using the Fitbit app.
The device also has Fitbit Pay and you can connect and control a Spotify premium account (by connecting to a phone nearby). It’s like carrying your music and wallet with you on your wrist, while counting every step along the way.
Its minimal design is meant to be worn during all parts of the day — it’s water-resistant up to 50 meters, so you can swim, sweat and bathe while wearing it.
Compared to the FitBit Charge 3, the Charge 4 looks exactly the same — it has a simple rectangular face and it’s super lightweight — and even with a few upgrades, it is sold for the same price of $149. (Note: The FitBit Charge 3 is currently on sale for $99.99 on Amazon.)
Of course, other fitness trackers out there by brands like Garmin can give you all the metrics of a workout, from elevation gain to predicting future race times, while smartwatches like the Apple Watch can also make calls, send texts and follow maps (for a much bigger price tag, too).
The FitBit Charge 4 is more of a straight-to-the-point, no frills, trustworthy fitness tracker for the person who enjoys working out but isn’t going pro anytime soon.
