As the CDC continues to double down on recommending citizens to wear fabric face masks amid the current global health crises, more and more brands are continuing to produce fashion cloth coverings. The latest release is from Steve Madden.

From tie-dye to leopard and classic solid black, these Steve Madden face masks are not intended for medical use, but instead, meant to add a decorative touch to the now necessary item. These masks will not protect you from getting the virus, although the CDC advises “the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.”

Additionally, the brand is selling activated carbon masks filters that work to isolate “up to 95 percent of airborne particles, germs, dust, chemicals, gas, pollen and more.” The mask filters come in a pack of 20 for $25.

Most importantly, the household name brand explained its efforts to give back during this uncertain time. “We are supporting our community by donating medical grade masks to hospitals and non-medical masks to homeless shelters. Our donations are not linked to purchases,” the website states.

Fashion brands transitioning their production to creating stylish face masks does not come without valid backlash. One customer expressed that Steven Madden is “is trying to profit off of a pandemic.”

However, other customers pointed out that manufacturing the masks is a good way to keep people employed: “love the idea of your fashion masks. I know that it is difficult to keep people employed during this time, so having another product to manufacture is a great way to keep your workforce employed. I have been purchasing materials to make and donate, but these will masks will bring a little bling,” a five-star review read.

Another shopper also agreed by writing, “I agree, I’m not so sure as to why the first review was negative. Everyone is selling Decorate masks now, why not Steve Madden and especially if they are donating as well. Thank you I actually purchased 4.”

The reusable and machine-washable fashion masks retail for $14.95, but you can save money by signing up for “SM Pass” for 20 percent off your first purchase, or get 30 percent off for your first purchase with “SM Pass Plus.”
