‘Pizza Groundhog’ is the 2020 version of ‘Pizza Rat’ — and the internet is in love

It’s been almost five years since “Pizza Rat” stole our hearts — and slices — becoming one of the most famous cheese-loving rodents in recent memory (sorry, Chuck E. Cheese).

But now the viral sensation has a new challenger: “Pizza Groundhog.” The Italian food-chomping animal, which received its apt nickname almost immediately, was discovered by Philadelphia resident Kristin Chalela Bagnell.

Bagnell, who caught the tiny thief in her backyard on April 14, noticed the groundhog thanks to her curious dogs, according to CNN.

“Before I recorded, we noticed that pizza was out in our backyard and we didn’t know where it came from,” she said. “Then both of the dogs were very intently looking out the glass.”

Bagnell’s video of the hilarious encounter, which was later shared by local news station WPVI-TV, shows the groundhog chomping on a large slice of pizza while staring inside her porch door. Despite more than a minute of staring from Bagnell and her dogs, the hungry mammal keeps on eating.

“It’s not just the people that like Philly pizza,” Bagnell captioned her video.

The clip has received thousands of shares across Bagnell’s personal page and through WPVI-TV, but it still has quite a way to go before it dethrones “Pizza Rat.” One video of the famous rodent has more than 11 million views — and that’s not including the clips shown by nearly every major news outlet at the time.
