Man baffles cops with outrageous reason for speeding: 'I had to check it’s not still April 1'

On April 7, an officer from Surrey Police’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU) pulled a driver over for going 130 miles per hour. And as if the speeding wasn’t bad enough, the driver evidently told the cop who pulled him over that he was, um, trying to outrun the coronavirus.

On Twitter, the RPU recalled the incident in full — and hilarious — detail.

“An officer stopped a driver who was speeding on the #M25 at 130mph. His reply to why he was speeding was, ‘I THOUGHT THE FASTER I WENT THE LESS CHANCE I WOULD CATCH CORONA VIRUS [sic],'” they wrote. “Driver reported to court.”

Unsurprisingly, people are in disbelief over the driver’s bizarre excuse.

“I had to check it’s not still April 1st,” one person said.

“You have to hand it to them, that’s quite an inventive excuse,” another user joked.

Ultimately, the RPU shared this silly story for one important reason: To encourage people to drive safely and #slowdown.
