British Airways flight to Germany lands in Scotland instead

Passengers on a British Airways flight were confused when their flight to Dusseldorf, Germany landed in Scotland instead.

Officials say both the pilot and air traffic control were under the impression that the flight was actually routed to Edinburgh when it left from London City Airport, not Dusseldorf.

Passengers realized the mistake when the pilot announced their landing in Edinburgh.

Flight BA3271 was then redirected to Dusseldorf.

Sophie Cooke, a management consultant who regularly commutes from London to Dusseldorf, told BBC News the plane took nearly three hours to begin the second leg of the journey into Germany.

WDL Aviation, which operated the flight on behalf of a BA subsidiary, said it was "working closely with the authorities to investigate how the obviously unfortunate mix-up of flight schedules could occur,"

Son Tran was among the passengers who wound up in the wrong country.

“While an interesting concept, I don't think anyone on board has signed up for this mystery travel lottery,” he wrote on Twitter.

After British Airways on Twitter said the flight had been “diverted,” Trans responded, “This feels like an honest mistake rather than a diversion. The crew was convinced of the Edinburgh flight path from the get-go.”

British Airways said in a statement that it would be reaching out to each passenger individually to apologize for the mix up in flights.
