Mystery surrounds death of Pennsylvania college athlete

Mystery still surrounds the death of a 19-year-old Pennsylvania college athlete who was found dead in Bermuda “at the base of a significant drop” a day after he vanished.

Rescue workers on Monday discovered the body of 19-year-old Mark Dombroski at the bottom of a dry moat at Fort Prospect, a colonial-era fort not far from the facility where his rugby team competed over the weekend, Superintendent Sean Field Lament said during a recent press conference.

His cell phone and wallet were also found with him.

The St. Joseph University freshman traveled with his team to Bermuda to compete in an international rugby tournament. After the matches concluded Saturday afternoon, he joined his friends and some family at The Dog House.

The Delaware native was last seen by teammates at the local bar shortly after midnight on Sunday, Bermuda police said. Investigators used CCTV footage to track Dombroski following his departure from the bar.

The clips see him walking alone on a road in Devonshire — “immediately to the south of where his body was found” — around 1:30 a.m., according to the press release.

Authorities continued to comb through CCTV images from the surrounding area but uncovered “no other activity in the neighborhood at that time.”

Where and what the teen did in the hours between 1 a.m. Sunday and 4 p.m. Monday is still a mystery, police said.

Investigators do not think alcohol played a role in the college freshman’s death. Lament also rejected “recent speculative social media posts” suggesting Dombroski was restrained when his body was discovered.

“Mark’s body was not bound or tied up,” he told reporters.

An autopsy is slated to be performed Wednesday by a pathologist being flown in from the United States.
