Pro surfer Zander Venezia dead at 16 after wave crash

Zander Venezia, a 16-year-old professional surfer, has died after a horrific accident in the waters of the east coast of Barbados, according to Surfline.com.

The teen water sports legend was reportedly pulled from the water "bleeding and unresponsive."

The surfing publication reported that Venezia was driven into the "shallow, rocky bottom" of the ocean by a large wave.

Surf instructor Alan Burke told Surfline Venezia's believed to have encountered "a closeout set," which is a wave capable of blocking the path of a moving surfer.

Rescue attempts were made quickly by those with the teen on the water, but he was unable to be revived.

"I'm told that Zander got overturned by a closeout set, where he likely hit bottom. Nathan Florence got to him first, then shouted for the other guys and started to perform CPR," Burke said.

"Zander was bleeding, and he wasn't moving. They tried to get him to the beach quickly, which was difficult. 'Box by Box' is a tough place to get in and out of, even if you have the ability. There's lots of big rocks around, and some stick out of the water."

According to Surfline's report, Venezia was "breathing, but not responsive" when paramedics got him to the hospital.

The group of pro surfers traveled to Barbados, where Venezia lived, to ride waves created by Hurricane Irma, Burke said.

Before he died, the surf instructor claims Venezia told fellow pro surfer Dylan Graves, "I just got the best wave of my life!"

"Dylan was the last person to speak to Zander. Then that next closeout set came through," Burke said.

An autopsy revealed Venezia's official cause of death to be drowning.

"Autopsy came back. He was knocked unconscious and drowned. No fractures," Burke told Surfline.
