Fall 2017's top hair trend is the black ribbon

In the fashion world, you can officially call something a trend after seeing it three times in a very short period of time, whether that be on the runway, the red carpet, or even on coworkers around the office. "Three's a trend," is one of the most used phrases in the fashion lexicon, way more than many of the words people think we use (like major, fierce, or fabulous). And so far this season, we've seen black ribbons used in the hair way more than three times, making it fall 2017's top hair trend so far. In New York, we saw it at Tory Burch and Marchesa; in London, at Temperley London and Emilia Wickstead, at Philosophy in Milan, and now it's shown up early on in Paris at Rochas.

"At first we were going to use different-colored ribbons but in the end it was more consistent and sophisticated-looking to use all black," said hairstylist Paul Hanlon, who meticulously sprayed, combed, and folded the hair into sleek loops at Rochas and added small black bows right above for a look that was "sophisticated, very elegant, and a bit equestrian." "We're just slipping the ribbon through the hair above the loop," he explained. But his technique was actually more meticulous than that. Using big plastic needles, Hanlon and his team actually threaded the small pieces of grosgrain through the hair before tying them into perfectly shaped bows, while the ponytail below was looped under itself, held in place by a hairnet, and tied off with a piece of elastic that Halon hid underneath a piece of hair.

While the black ribbon at Rochas was charming and inspired in part by dressage, this humble hair accessory isn't a one trick pony (see what I did there?). The effect can change depending on the material, the size, and the hairstyle you pair it with. With a simple low ponytail, a thin piece of black ribbon at Philosophy was cool. At Temperley London, long pieces of satin ribbon were tied around half-up hair for a look that evoked Blair Waldorf with an edge. And black velvet ribbons had very different effects at Emilia Wickstead (polished) and Tory Burch (nonchalant), the latter paired with easy low ponytails and tied asymmetrically, as if the sumptuous ribbon was a stylish afterthought. "Anyone can wear a style like this," said hairstylist Guido of the look he created at Tory Burch, then summing up the appeal of fall 2017's top hair trend: "There's something so nice about throwing a ribbon in your hair, and it's versatile. You can use it to dress up a plain t-shirt and jeans, but also chic enough to wear at night with a black evening dress."
