Italy hotel avalanche miracle: 10 found alive

Ten people have now been found alive in the wreckage of a Central Italian hotel destroyed by an avalanche.

"Brava Brava!" the rescuers cheered as one pair was lifted out alive.

Federica Chiavaroli [cq], a regional official, said "This is wonderful news. It brings a feeling of pure joy. ... It's truly a miracle. This will redouble the search efforts. ... We couldn't wish for any better news."

At least three people were killed by the avalanche, however, with that toll initially expected to rise.

"With thousands of civilians and soldiers who are working to save lives and reduce the inconvenience. Strength and courage," Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni tweeted Friday.

The avalanche was the most damning side effect of a larger series of four large earthquakes that struck Italy this week.

But the good news Friday "has obviously repaid all the rescuers' efforts," deputy interior minister Filippo Bubbico said.

The prime minister pledged his government's "commitment to support affected populations."
