Borderlands getting new sequel and movie adaptation

Updated

It's been all quiet on the Borderlands front since early last year, when the Borderlands: Handsome Jack Collection launched on the Xbox One and Playstation 4. We know that busy times are ahead for one of gaming's most popular new franchises though, and this week we've finally received an update on the series' future — both on the small screen and the big one.

On the gaming side of things, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed on Twitter that the company will soon be moving into development on Borderlands 3. The company is set to launch their next game, Battleborn, on May 3rd, and is thus moving resources and personnel over to the highly anticipated threequel. This is hot off the heels of Gearbox's tease that Borderlands 3 easter eggs may appear in Battleborn, and potentially in that game's future DLC.

Moving on to the realm of film, it was also announced yesterday that the in development Borderlands movie now has a writer. As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, scribe Aaron Berg will be penning the script for the film, which is set up over at Lionsgate by producer Avi Arad. Berg has yet to have a feature film credit under his name, but his Section 6 spec script made waves in Hollywood back in 2013, with Universal ultimately buying the project. He will also be writing the script for the forthcoming G.I. Joe 3.

At this point in time, the Borderlands movie is being described as "Mad Max in space," and will be "an edgy, R-rated take on the material." With an adaptation of this series, we wouldn't have it any other way.
