Pokemon Go launches new Halloween event, double candy allowance

Pokemon Go has launched its Halloween event, taking place from today until November 1. During the event players can get a ton more candy and have a better chance to capture some Halloween-leaning Pokemon.

During the event, capturing a Pokemon lets a player six candy instead of the normal three. Your chosen Buddy Pokemon will gain candy at four times the normal rate. You'll also get twice as much candy for hatching a Pokemon egg.

The good news is that you get greatly increased amounts of Candy, and the boosted buddy system means you've got a better shot at evolving your choice of Pokemon - more on that in a minute. You also get a better chance of bagging a Gengar, a later Gastly evolution which is normally reasonably rare. The bad news is that this is, somehow, going to introduce moreZubats, which might be the least-requested Pokemon Go update imaginable.

Still, in our proud tradition of offering the best in Pokemon Go guides and tips, we've prepared a quick overview of how you can make the best of the update as you're pounding the pavement Trick-or-Treating. Here's the list of Pokemon who'll be spawning more often throughout Halloween week:

  • Zubat

  • Golbat

  • Gastly

  • Haunter

  • Gengar

  • Drowsee

  • Hypno

That's the boring bit, though. Pokemon Go's Halloween update also applies some multipliers to the Candy you earn for different activities, which is laid out in this handy chart (albeit in KM - sorry about that). What to do in the Pokemon Go Halloween update:

  • Deploy some 2km eggs, and maybe even some additional incubators, to get the most out of that increased hatching speed.

  • Use the Buddy System to speed-level your choice of Pokemon - the obvious choice is to pick the rarest one. Check out our guide to catching rare Pokemon for some suggestions on that.

  • Clear out your collection and transfer any surplus Pokemon before the event ends, so you take advantage of the additional Candy

  • If you can stand it, load up on the common Pokemon - yes, even Zubats - so you can take advantage of the catch bonus.
